SHARING CHRIST THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS.
CHRIST CAME FOR THE SINNER.
Tremendous Truth About The Miracles Of Jesus Christ,
His Wonders, His Mighty Deeds, Signs Of His Messiah-ship.
The Central Message Of The Christian Faith.
But It’s Amazing How That Is Misconstrued.
You Have Hear People Say:
Christians Certainly Aren’t Perfect. We Already Know That.
Churches Certainly Aren’t Filled With Perfect People. We Know That, Too.
Churches Are Full Of Hypocrites. So You And I Should Be Included In That Truth.
TRUTH ABOUT THE CHURCH: It’s For Imperfect People Who Know Just How Imperfect They Are.
THE LORD SAYS:
I AM NOT COME TO CALL THE RIGHTEOUS, BUT SINNERS.
God Has Come For The Sick Not The Well.
The Message Of Christianity,
The Essence Of The Gospel,
The Reason For The Incarnation.
It Gives Us A Full Perspective On His Ministry.
It Gives Us The Basic Rationale Of The Incarnation.
SO, WHY DID JESUS COME INTO THE WORLD?
To Call Sinners.
Those Who Know They Have A Terminal Disease,
Those Who Are Desperate,
Those Who Are Hurting,
Those Who Are Hungry,
Those Who Are Thirsty,
Those Who Are Weak,
Those Who Are Weary,
Those Who Are Broken,
Those Whose Lives Are Shattered.
Sinners Who Know They’re Sinners.
AGAIN, HE CAME TO CALL NOT THE RIGHTEOUS BUT SINNERS.
Peter Said It: Depart From Me, O Lord, For I Am A Sinful Man.
Paul Said It: That Christ Jesus Came Into The World To Save Sinners, Of Whom I Am Foremost.
If He Came Into The World Only For The Righteous,
There Wouldn’t Be Anybody In His Kingdom,
Because, “There Is None Righteous, No Not One.
BUT: MANY WHO THINK THEY ARE RIGHTEOUS:
He Can Not Help Them Because They Do See Their Need.
Someone Must See Their Problem.
Then Jesus Can Provide The Solution.
Someone Must See Their Sin Disease.
Then Jesus Can Provide The Healing.
Matthew Is Presenting Jesus The Messiah.
He Is Providing Proof In Every Way Possible.
He Verifies The Lordship Of Christ, The Deity Of Jesus, And The Proof Of His Power Over Sin Demonstrated In Miracles.
REALIZE THE CONTEXT OF THESE VERSES:
Jesus Has Just Forgiven Sins.
Matthew Makes That Point In Verses 1 Through 8.
He Has The Ability And The Power To Forgive Sin.
QUESTION PRESENTED:
But How Much Sin Can He Forgive?
Whose Sin Can He Forgive?
Whose Sin Does He Not Forgive?
What Are The Parameters And Dimensions Of His Forgiveness?
What Is Necessary To Experience HIS Forgiveness?
So, Jesus Had Just Performed Several Miracles And The People Were Amazed.
Matthew Went On To Say: JESUS Forgave Me.
SIGNIFICANT ? YES:
Matthew Was Categorically The Vilest Person In Capernaum.
Matthew: Most Wretched Sinner In Town: The Tax Collector.
That Is Why He Uses Himself As An Illustration.
Matthew Was A Publican. A Tax Collector.
They Were A Group Of People Who Served Rome.
Rome Wanted To Impose Taxes.
Individuals Living In The Land Of Palestine Would Buy Franchises From The Roman Government
This Gave Them The Right To Operate The Taxation System In A Certain District Or A Certain Town.
When Matthew Bought Into The Roman System, He Revealed Himself As A Traitor To The Cause Of Israel.
Rome Required That He Collect A Certain Amount Of Taxes.
Anything He Could Get Over That He Could Keep.
Collectors Extorted From The Middle Class And The Poor.
Tax Collectors Became Hated.
Getting Rich At The Expense Of Their Own People.
The Jews Believed That It Was Wrong Anyway To Pay Taxes.
They Felt That Only God Should Receive Their Money.
Matthew Was A Man Under Conviction.
Matthew Was Have Wanted The Forgiveness.
But The Jewish System Told Him He Could Never Have It.
You Know, True Conversion Is Like That.
Matthew Lost A Career And Gained A Destiny.
He Lost His Security And Gained An Undreamed Adventure.
He Lost Material Things And Gained A Spiritual Fortune.
He Knew Jesus Had Come To Save Sinners,
Matthew Knew He Was A Sinner.
And If You’re Not Willing To Admit That,
He Has Nothing To Say To You.
SO, JESUS DEFENDS HIS DISCIPLES FOLLOWING HIM.
HE HAS A THREEFOLD POWERFUL ARGUMENT FOR THE PHARISEES WHO HATED LEVI:
THE FIRST ONE IS FROM HUMAN LOGIC.
THE SECOND ONE IS FROM SCRIPTURE.
THE THIRD ONE IS FROM HIS OWN DIVINE AUTHORITY.
FIRST OF ALL, HUMAN LOGIC:
The Analogy. Verse 12,
Healthy People Do Not Need A Physician; Sick People Do.
He Is Indicting The Pharisees.
He Is Saying: You Pharisees Are The Ones Who Are Saying Others Are The Sickest.
Then By Your Own Affirmation, They Most Need The Physician.
The Analogy Is Simple.
A Physician Can Be Expected To Go Among Sick People.
A Forgiver Should Be Expected To Go Among Sinful People.
His Defense Is Simple.
Jesus Goes To The People Who Have The Deepest Need.
The Pharisees Perceived Others As Sinners.
If You Pharisees Diagnosis Is So Accurate, Where Is Your Passion? Where Is Your Concern?
Are You A Doctor Who Diagnoses But Has No Desire To Cure?
AN INDICTMENT OF THEIR SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS !!
What An Indictment Of Their Judgmental Spirit.
What An Indictment Of Their Condemning Attitude.
They So Freely Defined All Others As Sinners.
They Were Utterly Indifferent About The Sinners Condition.
The Lord Says To Them (In A Later Chapter Of Matthew):
You Follow A Ritual Of Tithing On Even The Smallest Thing.
BUT You Have Omitted The Weightier Matters Of The Law, Like Justice And Mercy.
Where’s Your Mercy?
Where’s Your Compassion?
Where’s Your Love?
Where’s Your Care?
You Have Made The Diagnosis,
You Have Condemned Yourself Because You Stop There.
THE FIRST IS AN ARGUMENT FROM THIS ANALOGY.
THE SECOND IS AN ARGUMENT FROM SCRIPTURE.
“Go And Learn From The Rabbinic Writings.”
The Rabbis Used This Statement As An Exhortation.
They Rebuked Persons Who Didn’t Really Know What They Should Have Known.
“Go And Learn,” Meaning: Go Back To The Books. Come Back When You Learn What Your Own Text Says.
JESUS QUOTES HOSEA 6:6:
I Will Have Mercy, And Not Sacrifice.
In Other Words,
I Am Not Concerned With Ritual;
I Am Concerned With A Merciful Heart.
God Was Saying Through HOSEA:
You Have Gone Into Idolatry.
You Have Left Me.
You Have Forsaken Me.
And Still You Crank Out Your Little Religious Ritual.
It Is Not Sacrifice That I Want From You; It Is Mercy.
Blessed Are The Merciful, For They Shall Obtain Mercy,
So The Lord Is Indicting The Pharisees,
Saying: You’ll Never Get The Mercy Of God, Because You Show No Mercy.
This Indicates Your Hearts Aren’t Right.
JESUS SHOWS THE SELF-DELUDED RELIGIOUS LEADERS:
THAT THEY WERE FAR WORSE THAN THE PUBLICANS AND THE SINNERS.
Just Going Through A Certain Christian Routine,
Just Going To Church And Do Certain Things,
And Think That God Is Pleased.
GOD IS NEVER PLEASED WITH A ROUTINE
THAT IS SEPARATED FROM PERSONAL HOLINESS.
Without A Change Of Heart,
Without A Deep Sense Of Sin,
Sacrifices Were Dead Ritual, Loathsome, Hateful To God.
THE FIRST IS AN ARGUMENT FROM THIS ANALOGY.
THE SECOND IS AN ARGUMENT FROM SCRIPTURE.
THE THIRD IS FROM HIS OWN DIVINE AUTHORITY.
For I Am Not Come To Call The Righteous But Sinners.
WHAT IS THAT CALL OF CHRIST ??
TO REPENT OF SELF-RIGHTEOUS !!
TO COME TO HIM FOR FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SIN !!
TO COME TO JESUS FOR SALVATION !!
THAT’S THE WHOLE ISSUE.
Logic Says It, Scripture Says It, And Jesus Affirms It.
COULD THESE PHARISEES REALLY BE RIGHTEOUS:
When They Had No Mercy For Sinners,
When They Were Blind To The Word Of Their Own Prophet,
When They Were Raging At Jesus A Merciful Physician.
Remember The Lord Pictures His Kingdom Like A Banquet.
He Sends Out Invitations.
Not All The People Invited Come. Most Do Not Come.
That Is The Picture Of Israel.
So He Says: Go Out Into The Highways And Byways, And You Find The Poor, And The Lame, And The Crippled, And The Blind And Bring Them In.
YOU SEE, THE KINGDOM IS FOR THE HUNGRY AND THE THIRSTY; THEY SHALL BE FILLED.
The Kingdom Is For The Hurting And The Mourning And The Meek And The Sinful.
That Is What Jesus Is Saying.
This Is The Theme Of The Gospel,
That Jesus Came To Save Sinners;
That Is The Ringing, Recurring, Constant Theme.
UNTIL YOU KNOW YOU’RE A SINNER, THE LORD HAS NOTHING TO OFFER YOU.
