A very Happy Father’s Day
Opening PRAYER………
Really GREAT to be back in Texas with Y’allllll.
Honored to provide Jim with a well-deserved week off.
We moved to Arizona about 2 ½ years ago…..Let’s review what has happened during the 31 months since we left…..Now Hold on!:
Why is all of this so important….
In 2 Timothy Paul is literally passing the Mantle to Timothy
So…Now that the lock-downs are over….Praise God for that!
Here is what we have been up to…
Today, we are studying 2 Timothy, Chapter 1.
Second Timothy was written by the apostle Paul to his young pastoral protégé Timothy.
Overarching theme of 2 Timothy is:
Before we go further into 2 Timothy, to help provide some perspective about why this Letter from Paul is important to us, I want to share a brief story about a Near Death Experience…. taken from a book I recently read, written by Lee Strobel….THE CASE FOR HEAVEN.
Another passage from this book described a not so pleasant experience in great darkness and suffering.
These things are what the Apostle Paul was trying to save us for ….. and from.
Outline of 2 Timothy, Chapter 1:
Greeting (1:1–2)
Paul Longed to Be Encouraged by Timothy’s Faith (1:3–5)
Do Not Be Timid about Using Your Gifts for the Gospel (1:6–12)
Timothy Should Follow the Pattern and Content of Paul’s Teaching (1:13–14)
Two Examples Who Deserted Paul’s Pattern (1:15)
Starting with the…..Greeting Vs 1-2
Paul Greets Timothy as his “beloved Son” because Timothy was a great joy to the Apostle Paul.
Paul Longed to Be Encouraged by Timothy’s Faith Vs
3–5
Timothy was on Paul’s prayer list!
Who is on your prayer list?
Back to the Outline…..Paul said…Do Not Be Timid about Using Your Gifts for the Gospel Vs 6–12
When Paul put his hands on Timothy, that meant Timothy was a partner with Paul; he shared with him the gift of teaching the Word.
I love Vs 7…… “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
In Vs 8…..We are reminded what Jesus taught us in John 15:18…..
“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.”
In Vs 9-10…..Paul gives a brief summary of the Gospel.
In Vs 12…..Paul was in prison, condemned to die, but that did not stop his ministry
NEHEMIAH’S success…
Paul said that…..Timothy Should Follow the Pattern and Content of Paul’s Teaching Vs 13–14
In Vs 13……“Hold fast the pattern of sound words…”
In Vs 14….It is important to see that the Christian Life can only be lived in the power of the Holy Spirit!
Two Examples Who Deserted Paul’s Pattern Vs 15
Paul provides the names of those who have been unfaithful to him.
Why is that important?
Paul shared….One Example Who Followed Paul’s Pattern Vs 16–18
A fellow believer who sought Paul out…
A MEMORY VERSE for a study of all 2 Timothy would be:
2 Tim 2:2 “What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.”
2Tim 2:2 is the “Great Commission” verse.
The theme in the song: “The Commission” goes like this:
“Go tell the world about Me…”
Finally….Here is one more example of Near Death Experience from Lee Strobel’s book:
Theme….“Everything Is Exposed”
Next week Jim will take you into 2 Timothy, Chapter 2
