1. MARKS OF FALSE TEACHERS (6:3–5).
WARNING AGAINST THOSE WHO MISUSE GOD’S WORD.
A.
If Anyone Teaches Otherwise:
Timothy Must Be On Guard For The Misuse Of God's Word.
CONTEXT:
It May Mean Replacing The Plain Teaching Of God’s Word
With A Focus On Prophecies And Visions And Strange Spiritual
Experiences That People Claim.
This
Was A Great Danger That Paul Warned Timothy Against.
B. And Does Not Consent To Wholesome Words:
It May Mean The Argumentative Heretic.
Who Deviates From Scripture To Promote His Own Ideas.
Who Treats Scripture With Folly And Not As A Precious Gift.
You
Don’t Have To Be An Active Opponent To Be An Enemy Of It.
Failing To Give The Bible Its Rightful Place Is Opposing It.
THE
WARNING WAS NECESSARY:
Those Who Misuse God’s Truth Don’t Present It That Way.
They Often Claim To Honor God’s Word While Misusing It.
Different Ways People Do Not Consent To The Truth Of It.
· Some Deny God’s Word.
· Some Ignore God’s Word.
· Some Explain Away God’s Word.
· Some Twist God’s Word.
One Can Be Surrounded By God’s Truth;
One Can Even Memorize The Bible,
BUT It Doesn't Have Its Effect As It Should.
CURIOSITY OR INTEREST IN GOD’S WORD
WITHOUT SUBMISSION TO GOD'S WORD
IS DEFINITELY THE MISUSE OF GOD'S WORD !
PRIDE MAKES A PERSON MISUSE GOD'S WORD:
Regarding The Bible As Useless Information.
Proud But Knowing Nothing About The Bible.
Not Allowing God’s Word To Speak For Itself.
Having More Confidence In One's Own Wisdom.
Replacing With Stories, Opinions, Humor.
Obsessed With Disputes And Arguments.
ALL OF THESE ARE TO MISUSE GOD'S WORD.
Timothy Should Expect That Such Men Would:
· Envy Him And His Office (without Admitting To It).
· Would Create Strife Among The Christians.
· Would Promote Abuse Of Timothy And Church Leaders.
· Would Be The Source Of Evil Suspicions.
SUCH DANGEROUS PEOPLE ARE NOT AS OBVIOUS AS ONE THINKS.
Those Who Suppose Godliness Is A Means Of PERSONAL Gain:
Another
Characteristic Of Those Who Misuse God’s Truth.
Their Interest In The Things Of God Is Not Entirely For God’s Glory.
But Motivated In Part By Desire For Wealth And Comfort.
Christianity
Is Commonly Presented Today On The Basis Of
What You Will Gain By Following Jesus:
Personal Success And Happiness.
A Stronger Family.
A More Secure Life.
A Powerful Life To Obtain My Goals And My Dreams.
These Things May Be True To Some Degree,
But We Must Never Market The Gospel As A Product.
NEVER MARKET THE GOSPEL AS A FIX TO EVERY LIFE ISSUE.
IT Takes The Focus Off Jesus Himself.
IT Puts The Focus On What He Will Give Us.
IT Sets The Heart On The Blessings.
Not The ONE Who Blesses.
Yes, There Are True Blessings In Following Jesus Christ.
But The TRUE Need To Follow JESUS Is Not For His Benefits.
But Because He Is God And We Owe Him Everything.
WHAT IS RIGHT BEFORE GOD
AND WHAT GLORIFIES HIM
IS MORE IMPORTANT
THAN WHATEVER BENEFIT WE MAY GAIN.
FROM SUCH WITHDRAW YOURSELF:
DO NOT ASSOCIATE WITH THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL TEACHERS.
YOUR GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION INSINUATING YOUR AGREEMENT.
MONEY, CONTENTMENT AND GODLINESS.
2. MOTIVE OF FALSE TEACHERS (6:6–10).
THE GAIN OF GODLINESS.
NOW, GODLINESS IS GREAT GAIN:
It Is True That Godliness Is Great Gain.
FALSE TEACHERS OFFER A SENSE OF GODLINESS.
BUT TRUE GODLINESS MUST BE VALIDATED.
THE VALIDATION IS TRUE CONTENTMENT.
This Contentment:
Must Be Independent Of All Outward Things.
It Carries The Secret Of Happiness Within Itself.
WITH CONTENTMENT:
You Do Not Allow Yourself To Crave Worldly Fame And Fortune.
You Do Not Allow Yourself To Excessively Acquire Material Things.
You Do Not Allow Yourself To Seek Power For Your Gain.
BE CONTENT IN GOD: Not In Anything Other Than Him.
TRUE GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT IS GREAT GAIN:
Paul Knew This Kind Of Contentment First Hand.
Here Is His Testimony In Philippians 4:11-13:
Not That I Speak In Regard To Need.
For I Have Learned In Whatever State I Am,
To Be Content:
I Know How To Be Abased, And I Know How To Abound.
Everywhere And In All Things I Have Learned Both To
Be Full And To Be Hungry, Both To Abound And To Suffer Need.
I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me.
Material
Possessions In And Of Themselves Do Not Corrupt Us.
Abound In Material Things BUT Keep It In Perspective.
But There Is A Dangerous Line Between:
Enjoying Nice Things AND Replacing God With Materialism.
Materialism Is Demonstrating A Lack Of Contentment.
NOTES ABOUT HOW TO DEFEAT MATERIALISM:
Keep Your Heart Rooted In Eternal Things.
Live With An Eternal Perspective.
Keep From Rewarding Ourselves When We Are Discontent.
Remember It Is Normal To Desire More Than We Actually Need.
MONEY, CONTENTMENT AND GODLINESS.
2. MOTIVE OF FALSE TEACHERS (6:6–10).
THE GAIN OF GODLINESS.
NOW: THE HEART OF CONTENTMENT.
A. WE BROUGHT NOTHING INTO THIS WORLD:
A Man Rich In This World Mean Nothing In The World To Come.
B.
IT IS CERTAIN WE CAN CARRY NOTHING OUT:
But We Can Send Ahead Eternal Blessing And Reward Through
Wise Use Of Our Resources Right Now.
C.
HAVING FOOD AND CLOTHING:
Be Content With Simple Things.
MONEY, CONTENTMENT AND GODLINESS.
2. MOTIVE OF FALSE TEACHERS (6:6–10).
THE GAIN OF GODLINESS.
THE HEART OF CONTENTMENT.
NOW: THE FOLLY OF THE GREEDY HEART.
A. THOSE WHO DESIRE TO BE RICH:
Significantly, The Desire For Riches Is Far More Dangerous Than The Riches Themselves – And It Isn’t Only The Poor Who Desire To Be Rich, It Is Also The Rich Who Want More Riches.
Poor Does Not Mean Godly.
Rich Does Not Mean Ungodly.
Nor Is It True The Other Way Around.
There Were Many Remarkably Godly Men In The Bible
Who Were Unbelievably Rich: Abraham, David, Solomon.
B. THOSE WHO DESIRE TO BE RICH FALL INTO TEMPTATION:
Desire For Riches Tempts Our Heart Away From Eternal Riches.
This Desire Ensnares Us In A Trap Few Can Escape.
Always Dreaming Of Riches.
Always Setting One’s Heart On Them.
The Desire To Be Rich Can Really Only Be Satisfied In Jesus.
Be Satisfied With Spiritual Riches Rather Than Material Ones.
Everything Else Falls Short.
C. THE LOVE OF MONEY IS A ROOT OF ALL KINDS OF EVIL:
The Love Of Money Can Motivate Any Evil On This Earth.
There Is No Sin That Cannot Be Committed For The Money.
D.
PIERCED THEMSELVES THROUGH WITH MANY SORROWS:
This Is The Fate Of Those Who Live In The Love Of Money.
They Are Not Satisfied.
WHAT ARE THE DANGER SIGNS OF LOVING MONEY?
COULD THIS BE TRUE FOR THOSE WHO LOVE MONEY:
NEVER HAVE ENOUGH.
TEND TO FLAUNT IT.
RESENT GIVING IT.
WILL OFTEN SIN TO GET IT.
