OUTLINE:
GREETING.
(1:1–2)
THE
IMPROPER USE OF THE LAW.
(1:3–7)
THE
PROPER USE OF THE LAW.
(1:8–11)
Paul Wrote First Timothy From Macedonia In A.D. 62 Or 63.
Timothy Was Serving As His Representative In Ephesus.
Paul
Wrote This Letter As A Leadership Manual.
Paul Wanted To Teach An Effective Guidance In Ministry.
TIMOTHY
HAD A SPECIFIC JOB:
To Appoint Elders.
To Combat False Doctrine.
To Supervise Church Life.
Paul
Wrote The Letter Of 1 Timothy:
To Support Timothy.
To Guide A Difficult Situation.
WHO IS THE WARNING ABOUT ?
WHY MUST TIMOTHY BE SO CAREFUL ABOUT DOCTRINE ?
WHAT ARE OTHERS TEACHING ?
Jesus
Knew False Teaching In His Time On Earth.
He Knew How People Twisted The Law And God’s Word.
He Knew How People Twisted Teaching For Selfish Gain.
BUT
THE GOSPEL IS NOT ABOUT SELFISH GAIN.
THE GOSPEL IS SACRIFICE THAT COMES FROM LOVE.
LEADERS
MUST:
Stand Firm On The TRUE Gospel.
Stand Firm When Faced With False Teaching.
We
Should All Stand Firm On The Gospel.
The Good News Is Better Than Any Myth.
The Good News Is Better Than Sexual Immorality.
The Gospel Will Result In Godly Love And Godly Sincerity.
PAUL
TEACHES TIMOTHY AND FUTURE DISCIPLES THIS:
SIX REASONS TO STAY AND FINISH THE MINISTRY:
THIS WEEK:
1.
BECAUSE THEY NEED THE TRUTH.
(1 TIMOTHY 1:3-7).
2.
BECAUSE YOU MINISTER IN A HARD PLACE.
(1 TIMOTHY 1:8-11).
NEXT
WEEK:
3. BECAUSE GOD USES UNWORTHY PEOPLE.
(1 TIMOTHY 1:12-16).
4.
BECAUSE YOU SERVE A GREAT GOD.
(1 TIMOTHY 1:17).
5. BECAUSE YOU ARE IN A BATTLE AND CAN'T SURRENDER.
(1 TIMOTHY 1:18).
6.
BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE ELSE DOES MINISTRY.
(1 TIMOTHY 1:19-20).
1.
GREETING.
THE IDENTITY OF THE AUTHOR, PAUL.
(1-2).
THE ROYAL COMMAND.
THE HOPE OF THE WORLD.
GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE.
PAUL,
AN APOSTLE OF JESUS CHRIST:
Paul, In His Own Description, Emphasized His Credentials:
(Apostle) And His Authority (By The Commandment Of God).
1 Timothy Was
Written By The Apostle Paul To Timothy.
Sometime After His Release From Roman Imprisonment.
After His Release, Paul Returned To The City Of Ephesus.
He Discovered Ephesus Had Fallen Into False Teaching.
Paul
Probably Dealt With The False Teachers Personally.
But Soon Found It Necessary To Leave For Macedonia.
HE
THEN LEFT TIMOTHY IN CHARGE OF AFFAIRS AT EPHESUS.
Timothy Became His
Own Personal Representative.
He Knew That Timothy Had A Difficult Job To Carry Out.
THIS LETTER WOULD BOTH EQUIP AND ENCOURAGE HIM IN THE TASK.
BOTTOM LINE: THE TRUE IDENTITY OF JESUS CHRIST WAS CLEAR !!
THE IDENTITY OF THE RECIPIENT: TIMOTHY.
A. TO TIMOTHY:
The Book Of Acts Tells Us Timothy Came From Lystra In Galatia.
He Was The Son Of A Greek Father And Jewish Mother Eunice.
His Mother And Grandmother Taught Him Scriptures From Youth.
B. A TRUE SON IN THE FAITH:
Paul Could Consider Timothy A True Son In The Faith.
He Probably Led Him And His Mother To Faith In Jesus.
Paul Expressed Confidence In Timothy.
TIMOTHY Was A Man Of Integrity And Faithfulness To The Truth.
C. GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE:
A Familiar Greeting Paul Used In His Letters To Congregations.
God Grants His Grace, Mercy, And Peace To All In The Church.
CONTEXT
SUMMARY: FIRST TIMOTHY 1:3–11:
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
AN IMPROPER USE OF THE LAW
VERSUS
A CORRECT APPLICATION OF IT.
THE LAW IS NOT MEANT TO DRIVE US INTO LEGALISM.
THE LAW IS MEANT TO MAKE US AWARE OF OUR SIN.
THE FALSE TEACHERS OF EPHESUS:
Are Bickering Over The Law And Missing The Point.
Are Driven By Their Desire For Prestige And Personal Gain.
Are Lacking The Knowledge Of The Gospel To Even Teach It.
PAUL GIVES A LIST OF SINS PARALLEL TO THE TEN COMMANDMENTS.
It Shows The Law Is Meant To Convict Such People Of Sin.
It Shows How The Law Is Useful To Explain The Gospel Of Christ.
2. THE IMPROPER USE OF THE GOSPEL.
BECAUSE THEY NEED THE TRUTH.
PAUL URGES TIMOTHY TO STAY IN EPHESUS.
PAUL URGES TIMOTHY TO STAY WITH THE SCRIPTURES.
(3-7).
A. REMAIN IN EPHESUS:
SO YOU MAY COMMAND SOME:
B. TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO OTHER DOCTRINE.
C. TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO FABLES AND UNENDING GENEALOGY.
D. TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO DISPUTES.
A.
REMAIN IN EPHESUS:
Paul Left For Macedonia.
He Urged Timothy To Remain.
Paul Knew The Work Was Difficult.
DID
TIMOTHY WANT TO FLEE THE SITUATION ?
Probably Both External Pressure And Internal Pressure.
MANY
REASONS TO FLEE:
He Might Have Missed Paul And Wanted To Be With His Mentor.
He Might Have Been Intimidated By Following Paul’s Ministry.
He Might Have Been Somewhat Timid.
He Might Have Been Frightened By The Challenge.
He Might Have Been Discouraged By Difficulties Of Ministry.
He Might Have Questioned His Own Calling.
He Might Have Been Frustrated By False Doctrines Teachings.
AGAIN,
BECAUSE THEY NEED THE TRUTH.
God Will Allow Us To Be In Difficult Situations.
We Must Set Our Minds To Meet The Challenge.
Or We Will Surely Give Up.
REMAIN
IN EPHESUS:
SO YOU MAY COMMAND SOME:
B. TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO OTHER DOCTRINE.
Paul Left Timothy
With An Important Job To Do.
Making It All The More Important That He Remain In Ephesus.
TO MAKE SURE CORRECT DOCTRINE WAS TAUGHT IN EPHESUS.
NO OTHER DOCTRINE:
Paul Left The Ephesians With A Particular Set Of Teachings.
Paul Received His Teachings From Jesus And The Old Testament.
Paul Wants To Make Sure The Ephesians Continue In That Doctrine.
Paul Knows Accurate Doctrine Is Important To God.
Paul Knows That It Should Be Important To His People.
Unfortunately It Is Not Highly Important To Most People !!
NO
WONDER TIMOTHY FELT LIKE LEAVING EPHESUS.
HE WAS TO COMMAND THIS TRUTH LIKE A MILITARY OFFICER.
REMAIN
IN EPHESUS:
SO YOU MAY COMMAND SOME:
TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO OTHER DOCTRINE.
C. TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO FABLES AND GENEALOGY.
WHAT WAS THE GREAT DANGER OF THESE TEACHINGS ?
DISTRACTIONS !! (FABLES AND ENDLESS GENEALOGY)
TIMOTHY HAD TO REMAIN IN EPHESUS.
HE NEEDED TO COMMAND CONTROL TO OTHERS.
TO IGNORE THESE SPECULATIONS AND DISTRACTIONS.
IT WAS ABOUT:
Emphasizing The Wrong Things.
EX: Other Messiahs, Other Books Written By Non Apostles.
And Traditions Not Based On Teachings Of The Apostles.
IT
WAS ABOUT:
Allowing Corruption To True Sound Doctrine.
By Giving Validity To Fables And Endless Genealogy.
IT
WAS ABOUT:
Allowing Distractions To Replace Godly Edification.
1. Legalism That Teaches Righteousness By Ancestry.
2. Doctrine Based On Mystic Readings Of O.T. Genealogies.
3. Interest In These Things Will Crowd Out Godly Edification.
ERROR
AND HERESY.
THE SPECULATIONS BY THE GREEKS.
THE MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE LAW BY THE JEWS.
THE ETHICS OF HERESY AND THE MIND OF THE HERETIC.
REMAIN IN EPHESUS:
SO YOU MAY COMMAND SOME:
TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO OTHER DOCTRINE.
TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO FABLES AND ENDLESS GENEALOGY.
D. TO PAY NO ATTENTION TO DISPUTES.
The
Eventual Fruit Of These Man-Made Diversions Is Evident.
They May Be Popular And Fascinating In The Short Term.
In The Long Run They Don’t Strengthen God’s People.
AGAIN, BECAUSE THEY NEED THE TRUTH.
THEY END UP ARGUING AND DEBATING AND DISPUTING.
THE PURPOSE OF THE COMMANDMENTS.
A. THE PURPOSE OF THE COMMANDMENTS:
The Purpose Of The Law Is Found In Its Inward Work.
Its Inward Work Is Upon The Heart.
The Law Is Not In Mere Outward Observance.
It Is Easy To Become A Shallow Law Keeper.
It is Easy To Focus On Outward Performance And Appearance.
B. LOVE FROM A PURE HEART:
It Appears The People In Ephesus Did Not Understand.
The Commandment And The Law Was Being Twisted.
TIME IN GOD'S WORD SHOULD PRODUCE:
A PURE HEART.
A GOOD CONSCIENCE.
A SINCERE FAITH.
LEGALISM MAY MAKE US TWIST GOD’S WORD.
INSTEAD OF:
SHOWING LOVE WE ARE HARSH AND JUDGMENTAL.
INSTEAD OF:
HAVING A GOOD CONSCIENCE WE FEEL CONDEMNED.
INSTEAD OF:
SINCERE FAITH WE TRUST IN OUR ABILITY TO PLEASE GOD.
C.
UNDERSTANDING NOT WHAT THEY SAY.
THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE THINGS WHICH THEY AFFIRM:
THE
PROBLEM IN EPHESUS:
People Did Not Understand The Implications.
People Affirmed The Law Outwardly But Could Not Keep It Inwardly
3.
THE PROPER USE OF THE GOSPEL.
BECAUSE YOU MINISTER IN A HARD PLACE.
PAUL DOES CONDEMN LEGALISTS.
PAUL DOES NOT CONDEMN THE LAW.
(8-11).
THOSE WHO NEED NO LAW.
THOSE WHOM THE LAW CONDEMNS.
A.
BUT WE KNOW THAT THE LAW IS GOOD IF USED LAWFULLY:
The Purpose Of The Law Is To Show Us Our Sin.
Not To Lead Us To Righteousness.
(Galatians 3:24-25).
IT WAS NOT MADE
FOR THE RIGHTEOUS PERSON
WHO WALKS BY FAITH.
BUT
FOR
THE LAWLESS AND INSUBORDINATE:
TO SHOW THEM THEIR SIN.
AND
IT WILL
ESPECIALLY SPEAK TO THE UNGODLY.
B.
THE LAW IS MAINLY FOR THE LAWLESS AND INSUBORDINATE.
FOR THE UNGODLY AND FOR SINNERS:
SOUND
DOCTRINE AND RIGHT CONDUCT ARE VITALLY CONNECTED.
SINFUL
ACTIONS ARE CONTRARY TO SOUND DOCTRINE.
Many People Will Condemn Anyone With High Moral Standards.
Accused Of Being Legalistic.
Keeping High Standards Does Not Make Us Legalistic.
Obedience Does Not Make Us Legalistic.
WE
ARE LEGALISTS WHEN WE THINK
WHAT WE DO IS WHAT MAKES US RIGHT BEFORE GOD.
C.
THE LAW IDENTIFIES THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIOR THAT IS
CONTRARY TO SOUND DOCTRINE:
AGAIN,
THE FALSE TEACHERS OF EPHESUS:
Are Bickering Over The Law And Missing The Point.
Are Driven By Their Desire For Prestige.
Are Lacking The Knowledge Of The Gospel To Even Teach It.
The Ephesian Church Existed In A Culture Marked By These Sins.
THOSE TEACHING FALSE DOCTRINE IN SOME WAY
ALLOWED OR PROMOTED THIS SINFUL LIFESTYLE.
THE SINFUL ENVIRONMENT OF EPHESUS:
He Should Remain There Because It Was A Difficult Place.
Difficult To Serve God And Further The Kingdom.
He Had To Break Up The Fallow Ground There.
Instead Of Running To An Easier Place To Plow.
D. THE LAW IS CONSISTENT WITH THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD:
THE LAW CANNOT BRING RIGHTEOUSNESS.
BUT THE GLORIOUS GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST CAN.
