Finishing Well | 2 Timothy 4: 1-22

OUTLINE

  1. COMMAND TO PREACH THE WORD (4:1–8).

  2. PERSONAL REQUESTS (4:9-18).

  3. FINAL WORDS (4:19–22).

CONTEXT

EXPECT OPPOSITION TO THE GOSPEL.

PEOPLE WILL BE OPPOSED TO THE FAITH.

THE WORD OF GOD IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED TO:

TEACH, REBUKE, AND TRAIN OTHERS

IN RIGHTEOUSNESS

AND THE POWER IS IN GOD’S WORD.

2 TIMOTHY 4 – PAUL’S FINAL TESTIMONY TO TIMOTHY

1. COMMAND TO PREACH THE WORD (4:1–8).

A. PAUL’S FINAL TESTIMONY TO TIMOTHY.

(1) A SOLEMN CHARGE TO TIMOTHY.

A. WHAT: TAKE HEED AND BE FAITHFUL.

B. WHO: BEFORE GOD AND THE LORD JESUS CHRIST,

C. WHY: WILL JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE DEAD:

D. WHEN: AT HIS APPEARING AND HIS KINGDOM:

(2) THE TESTIMONY: PREACH THE WORD!

A. Preach The Word:

Paul’s Emphasis On The Word Of God Has Been Constant.

36 REFERENCES TO THE TRUE GOSPEL IN THIS LETTER.

17 REFERENCES TO FALSE TEACHINGS.

This Constant Emphasis Makes Paul’s Point Clear To Timothy:

· Do Not Be Ashamed Of The Testimony Of Our Lord.

· Hold Fast The Pattern Of Sound Words.

· Teach To Faithful Men What I Have Taught You.

· Rightly Dividing The Word Of Truth.

· All Scripture Is Given By Inspiration Of God.

NOT JUST TO MERELY KNOW THE WORD.

OR TO LIKE THE WORD.

OR TO APPROVE OF THE WORD.

BUT TO PREACH THE WORD.

AND THE WORD IS TO BE THE CONTENT OF THE MESSAGE.

WHY DO WE LOVE IN THE BIBLE?

THE BIBLE:

IT SHOWS US GOD'S CHARACTER.

PROVIDES US GOD'S REVELATION OF HIMSELF.

GOD'S HOLY, UNCHANGING, FAITHFUL, GRACIOUS LOVE.

B. Be Ready In Season And Out Of Season:

Should Be Ready Always.

Should Teach Or Preach It When It Is Easy.

Should Teach Or Preach It When It Is Hard.

Should Teach Or Preach It When The Fruit Is Evident.

Should Teach Or Preach It When The Fruit Seems Invisible.

C. Convince, Rebuke, Exhort, With Longsuffering:

BECAUSE IT IS MORE THAN JUST AN INTERESTING IDEA.

(3-4) THE NEED FOR THE TRUE PREACHING OF THE WORD.

A. They Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine:

Timothy Needed To Keep Focused On The Word Of God.

Mankind, In Natural Instinct, Does Not Want God’s Revelation.

Would Rather Hear What One Wants To Hear.

Would Rather Hear What Makes One Feel Good About Self.

B. They Will Heap Up For Themselves Teachers:

The Most Popular Teachers

Are Not Necessarily

The Most Faithful Teachers.

C. And Be Turned Aside To Fables:

Once People Leave The Word Of God They Often Then Embrace

Fantastic Fantasies.

WHEN SOMEONE REJECTS GOD’S TRUTH,

IT ISN’T THAT ONE BELIEVES IN NOTHING;

ONE WILL BELIEVE IN ANYTHING.

(5) THE TESTIMONY RESTATED: FULFILL YOUR MINISTRY.

BE WATCHFUL IN ALL THINGS.

ENDURE AFFLICTIONS.

DO THE WORK OF AN EVANGELIST.

FULFILL YOUR MINISTRY.

Reasons Why Someone Might Not Fulfill One's Ministry:

(8) PAUL’S CROWN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Paul Knew There Was A Crown Waiting For Him In Heaven.

WHY A CROWN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

INSTEAD OF A CROWN OF GLORY OR OF JOY OR OF PEACE?

Righteousness Is The Greatest Need We Sinful Humans Have.

It Is The Singular Thing We Cannot Do For Ourselves.

It Is From The Crown Of Righteousness

That All Other Crowns Will Come.

2. PERSONAL REQUESTS (4:9-18).

This Is Evidence Of A Restoration Of Trust In Mark From Paul.

E. Bring The Cloak That I Left With Carpus At Troas:

The Cloak Left In Troas Shows Us:

· Paul Gave Up Everything To Serve Jesus.

· Paul Was Almost Completely Forsaken By His Friends.

· Paul Was An Ordinary Man With Ordinary Needs.

F. And The Books, Especially The Parchments:

Paul Stayed A Scholar To The End And Wanted His Books.

(14-15) BEWARE OF ALEXANDER THE COPPERSMITH.

A. Alexander The Coppersmith Did Me Much Harm:

(16-18) GOD’S FAITHFULNESS TO PAUL AS HIS DEFENSE.

A. No One Stood With Me… But The Lord Stood With Me:

Paul Served God Faithfully During His First Defense.

Paul Was Not Bitter That All Forsook Him.

C. To Him Be Glory Forever And Ever:

He Thought About Others And Not Himself.

Even The Apostle Paul Did Not Have

Miraculous Healing Powers To Use At His Own Will.

C. Do Your Utmost To Come Before Winter:

(22) PAUL'S LAST WORDS FROM HIS PEN.

A. The Lord Jesus Christ Be With Your Spirit. Grace Be With You.

The Last Words Of Paul Reflect A Man:

Who Simply Loved Jesus.

Had Received His Grace.

All The Power That Went With It.

And It Marked The Entire Ministry Of Paul.

B. Amen:

Paul Had Fulfilled His Ministry.

Paul Was Ready To Receive His Reward.

Paul Wanted Timothy To Do The Same.
