Focus on Fellowship

Question:
How does the Bible define fellowship?
Why should we have Christian fellowship?

Answer:
-The basic definition of Christian fellowship is the act of meeting with those who are converted and who possess the same general beliefs.

-It is the sharing of knowledge and the trials and triumphs of life among those who are called and chosen of God.

-Such regular fellowship meetings are an essential element in a believer's spiritual growth and development.

The Fellowship of the Believers: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

Several basic elements to fellowship for it to be successful:
Those who meet together:

1. Should have things in common like:
Beliefs
Love God. Love your neighbor as yourself. Forgive others who have wronged you. Love your enemies. Ask God for forgiveness of your sins. Jesus is the Messiah and was given the authority to forgive others. Repentance of sins is essential.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Work
Producing spiritual fruit, which is good work, is evidence of your faith in Christ Jesus.
To obey, to be ready for every good work. Titus 3:1.
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. James 1:22.

Needs
Though they have been going through much trouble and hard times, they have mixed their wonderful joy with their deep poverty, and the result has been an overflow of giving to others. 2 Corinthians 8:1 - 15.

Struggles
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12.

Common purpose
How wonderful it is, how pleasant, when brothers (and sisters) live in harmony! Psalms 133:1.

Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17.

The Need for a Common Vision. 1 Corinthians 1:10–17.

A team has checks and balances, one person watches the other one’s back.
They help them if they falter or lose sight of the goal, just like in friendship.
A good friend isn’t someone who always agrees with you, what you do, or what you say.
A real friend is someone that is willing to challenge you, to be better as a person.
A team player encourages his fellow team mates to be better players.
Teamwork and friendship both work in very similar ways.

Conviction
You should be like one big happy family, full of sympathy toward each other, loving one another with tender hearts and humble minds. 1 Peter 3:8.

Hope
We are all parts of one body, we have the same Spirit, and we have all been called to the same glorious future. Ephesians 4:4.

2. Should share in the responsibility of helping others in the faith who may lack the essentials of life:
For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints (2 Corinthians 8:3 – 4).

3. Should petition humbly with thanksgiving to God (Supplicate) for those in our fellowship:
I (the Apostle Paul) thank my God on every remembrance of you, Always making supplication with joy in my every prayer for you all, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now (Philippians 1:3 - 5, see also Galatians 2:9).

4. Should desire to walk in the light of God's word:
All believers should share in what is called the gospel mystery, "And that I might enlighten all as to what is the fellowship of the mystery that has been hidden from the ages in God . . ." (Ephesians 3:9).

Koinonia: Greek word which refers to communion or fellowship, joint participation, the share which one has in anything, a gift jointly contributed, a collection, a contribution, etc.

Focus on Supplication

Philippians 4:4–7
4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand;
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

What is the difference between prayer and supplication ?

-Supplication: Pleading a humble petition to God
-Prayer: Sincere thanksgiving or request made to God

Supplicate, praying a pleading humble petition to God, with:
1. Calm assurance.
Peace comes when we go to God and trust Him.

2. Confidence.
Jesus gives us access to God’s presence.
We receive mercy and grace and help.

3. Clarity of focus.
Focus on the all-powerful God who is sovereign over all things.

4. Without Ceasing.
Prayer: a way for us to develop our fellowship with God.
As we pray with persistence, we find ourselves growing in grace while we wait for the answer.

5. In Community.
Our relationships are strengthened bearing burdens of others.
Prayer is useful for encouragement to others.
Pray for those who are suffering.
Pray for the sick.
Pray for revival in our nation.
Pray for those who are lost.

Like A Building Block, Supplication is foundational to spiritual stability

This Scripture deals with SPIRITUAL STABILITY Through Supplication:

Teaches Us How To:
-Face trying times;
-Face great temptation;
-Face great trials;
-Face persecution;
-Face great family loss;
-Face times of confusion;
-Face distress and illness;
-Face weakness;
-Face fear;

How can we be spiritually strong !
How can we be calm and at peace during grave difficulty !
How do we demonstrate what we think about The Lord !

How can this building block of supplication / spiritual stability show through ?

Answer:
We show SPIRITUAL STABILITY through SPIRITUAL MATURITY:
(Remember: Fruit produced by the spirit is spiritual virtue)

Virtues That Are Indication Of Spiritual Maturity:

BE A SPIRITUAL STABILIZER BY:

1. Being a peacemaker cultivating peace in fellowship of love:
-Be in an environment of peace in our fellowship.
-Be NOT a troublemaker but a peacemaker in our fellowship.
-Be a stabilizer in the fellowship.

2. Being joyful in the Lord:
-Based on a focused relationship with the Lord;
-Based on permanent union with Him;
-Based on cultivating a deep love for Him;
-Based on living in the light of His Holy Spirit;
-Be a stabilizer in your relationships.

3. Being Humble:
-Be satisfied with less;
-Be contented;
-Be gracious;
-Be aware we deserve nothing;
-Be aware we have given up our rights;
-Be a stabilizer in your attitude.

4. Being Confident In Your Faith In the Lord:
-Know He is near;
-Know He is in control;
-Know He is always working His plan.
-Know He is a promise keeper.
-Know He is sovereign.
-Be a stabilizer demonstrating your faith in Him.
  • All Scripture is the revelation of God.
  • In knowing Scripture we know God.
  • In knowing God we know He knows us.
  • In knowing God we can expect His love toward us.
  • In knowing God we can predict His purposes.
  • God is on our side.
  • Confidence He is on our side anchors you in battle.
  • He’s not our enemy; He’s our friend,
  • He’s our resource, He’s our power.
  • We can be stable in any situation if:
      We understand His sovereign control;
      We understand His sovereign purposes;
      We understand His great power over anything.

5. Being Thankful:
Spiritual Stability requires us to react to issues with thankful prayer.

Do We Want To Know How To Overcome Anxiety / Worry?
Verse 6: In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God;

Not an emphasis on the theology of prayer BUT:
-The importance of prayer;
-The attitude of prayer;
-The words that petition God;
Prayer, Supplication, Request.

Cry out to God:
-not in our difficulty,
-not in our doubt,
-not in our dissatisfaction,
-not in our discontent,
BUT IN THANKSGIVING.
BECAUSE of His Promises !!

1 Peter 5:10:
He is the God of promise who is allowing you to suffer:
that you might be made perfect,
that you might be settled,
that you might be established.

Supplicate With Thanksgiving
Make A Humble Petition To God With Thanksgiving

Thankful for His purposes,
Thankful for His providence,
Thankful for His power,
Thankful for His promise,
Thankful for His perfecting work,
Thankful for the hope of relief,
Thankful for the hope of glory,
Thankful that it is His Will,
Thankful that He accomplishes His purposes,
Thankful for past mercies.
NOTE:
The promise is if you pray and supplicate with a thankful heart:
God WILL grant you peace in all situations no matter God's answer.
God WILL NOT always answer your prayer the way you want.

What kind of peace is it?
It is peace which surpasses all comprehension,
It is not human,
It is not rational,
It transcends intellectual powers,
It transcends analysis,
It transcends man’s insights,
It transcends man’s understanding,
It transcends man’s definition,
It transcends man’s explanation,

BUT YOU MUST GO TO GOD TO GET THAT KIND OF PEACE !!
IT IS SUPERNATURAL PEACE !!
It is not a cheap substitute,
It is not an attempt to reason your troubles away,
It is not through superior human scheming,
It is not through superior human devices,
It is not through superior human solutions,
It is not through superior human security,
It is not trying to create a perfect world,

John 16:33:
In this world you shall have tribulation;
Be of good cheer;
Jesus has overcome world (the evil world system).

Accept the fact:
Fallen people are living in a fallen world;
Expect no tranquility in this current evil world system;
Supernatural Peace is found by trusting in Jesus;
Jesus has overcome this evil world system;
The peace of God surpasses all comprehension;
The peace of God guards your hearts;
The peace of God guards your minds;
The peace of God protects you from anxiety;
The peace of God protects you from difficulty;
The peace of God protects you from distress;
The peace of God protects you from dissatisfaction;
The peace of God protects you from discontent;
The peace of God protects you from doubt;

Focus on Thanksgiving

Psalm 100:1-5
A psalm for giving grateful praise.
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before Him with singing.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is He who made us, not we ourselves,
and we are His people,
the sheep of His pasture.
4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving;
and His courts with praise;
give thanks to Him and praise His name.
5 For the Lord is good / His love endures forever;
His faithfulness continues forever.

God cares about our actions and our attitudes
God Wants You to Give Thanks
HE WILLS US TO BE THANKFUL ALL THE TIME

Here are some reasons why . . .
1. Thanksgiving Glorifies God:
2 Corinthians 4:15 For all things are for your sakes, so that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God.

Paul is declaring:
-his motive for all the sacrificial service he rendered to Corinth.
-that thanksgiving abounded to the glory of God.
Think of how he experienced heartache in the Corinthian church:
-misunderstood,
-ridiculed,
-maligned,
-attacked.
Think how he sacrificed so God’s grace would reach the lost.
Think how the praise of the redeemed was heard by God.

NOTE:
Luke 17 and the story of the ten lepers:
Christ met ten lepers in a village between Samaria and Galilee.
He told them to go and show themselves to the priest.
They obeyed His command,
Christ instantaneously healed all ten.
Only one of them, when healed, turned back.
Only one of them glorifying God and giving thanks to Him.
God’s glory and thanksgiving are inseparable.

2. Thanksgiving Comes From Recognizing God’s Goodness:
1 Timothy 4:4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the Word of God and prayer.

But by gratefully receiving and enjoying God’s gifts, believers fulfill God's intention for which they were created.

Three Motivations To Recognize His Goodness:
His Goodness leads us to discover His Grace and Mercy.
His Love Endures Forever.
His Faithfulness Continues to All Generations.

3. Thanksgiving Is A Common Part Of Worship:
Psalm 100:4 An ATTITUDE of Thanksgiving:
Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, bless His name.

When you enter God’s presence harboring ingratitude, your worship is unacceptable.

When the early church met in the New Testament, one of its main purposes was to give thanks to God.

Ephesians 5:3–4; see 2 Corinthians 4:15; 9:11 But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

4. Thanksgiving Reflects Godly Humility:
Spiritual maturity can be measured by your thanksgiving;
when, where, how, why.
The Bible tells us to be thankful for all people and all things.

What would a list of all things include?
Corrupt governments, unjust employers, bitter spouses, severe illnesses, chronic pain, economic collapses — all things. (1 Thessalonians 5:18; Philippians 4:6).

Only one kind of person is able to express gratitude for those things—a humble Christian.

Spiritually Mature Humble Christians will be thankful in all things.

5. Thanksgiving Is Commanded By God:
-Gratitude should come naturally to believers.
-Gratitude should be in response to all God has done.
-Gratitude should be an act of obedience to God's command.

The imperatives (commands) of thanksgiving found in Psalm 100:
Shout for Joy to the Lord.
Worship (serve) the Lord with Gladness.
Come Before Him with Singing.
Know that the Lord is God.
Enter His Gates with Thanksgiving.
Enter His Courts with Praise.
Give Thanks to Him.
Praise His Name.
Ephesians 5:20 Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father.

He enables us to give thanks and is pleased when we do.

God commands us to find reasons for thanking Him always
(Acts 5:41; James 1:2-3; 1 Peter 1:6-9). That’s His will.

If you’re not obeying that command
you’re not following God’s will.

If gratitude doesn’t come easy for you
neither will finding God’s will.

If you struggle with being thankful
you’ll struggle with following God’s will.

6. Thanksgiving Acknowledges God’s Sovereignty:
Greatest act of worship you can render to God is to thank Him.
Through gratitude, we affirm God as the ultimate source of all.

An attitude that sees beyond the circumstance to God's plan.
It sees beyond the pain to the sovereignty of God.

An attitude of thanksgiving enables us to:
-deal with those who wrong us.
-see God's providential hand caring for us.
-trust He uses these circumstances for His glory.
-remember suffering perfects, strengthens, establishes us.
God wills that kind of thankfulness.

7. Thanklessness Characterizes Fallen Humanity:
2 Timothy 3:1-2 In the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy . . .

Ingratitude characterizes fallen humanity in the last days.

8. Thanklessness Is Judged By God:
Ingratitude / Thanklessness is the very essence of an unregenerate heart. Unbelief and Ingratitude bring about God’s judgment.

Romans 1:21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Because mankind, in pride, fails to honor and glorify God as Creator, also refuses to thank Him for His gracious provision.

Although God is the source of every good thing that mankind possesses but the lost refuse to thank Him because to acknowledge God's provision would require worship of Him.

Expressing Thanksgiving to God:
Promises grace and peace.
Our Gratitude is recognized by Him.
Christians are distinguished by attitudes of Thanksgiving.
Thanklessness marks godless wicked ones who lie.
