1 JOHN 3:4-10 EXPLAINED:

Everyone Who Sins Is Breaking God’s Law,

All MORAL FAILURE Is Contrary To The Law Of God,

Jesus Came To Take Away Our Sins,

There Is No Sin In Him,

Anyone Who Abides In Him Will Not Practice MORAL FAILURE,

Anyone Who Keeps On Sinning Does Not Know Him.

Anyone Who Keeps On Sinning Does Not Understand Who He Is.

Do Not Be Deceived About This,

When People Do What Is Right: Shows That They Possess His Righteousness.

But When People Keep On Failing Morally: Shows That They Belong To Satan.

NOTE: The Son Of God Came To Destroy The Works Of Satan.

Those Who Have Been Born Into God’s Family,

Do Not Make A Practice Of MORAL FAILURE,

Because God’s Life Is In Them,

So They Can not Keep On Practicing Sin,

Because They Are Children Of God.

The Command To Love:

We Can Tell Who Are Children Of God,

We Can Tell Who Are Children Of Satan,

Anyone Who Does Not Live Righteously,

THE BELIEVER AND MORAL FAILURE:

THEME:

Because MORAL FAILURE Is Serious,

Because Sin Is Opposed To The Reasons Why Christ Came,

Because Christians Cannot Live In MORAL FAILURE,

Because Sin Is Serious Rebellion Against God,

Because Sin Is Totally Opposed To Christ,

Because True Christians Do Not Live In MORAL FAILURE.

FOCUS:

The Conflict BetweenThe Children Of God And Children Of Satan.

1. He Came To Deliver Us From MORAL FAILURE.

2. He Came To Destroy The Works Of Satan.

3. He Came To IDENTIFY THE MARKS Of The Children Of God.

- Of Our Obligation To Purity Due To This Hope Of Heaven,

- Of Communion With Christ In Glory At The Day Of His Appearance,

- Of Resisting Sin And All Communion With The Fruit Of Darkness.

Sin Is Corruption Of Divine Law.

Divine Law Contains:

- God's Will For The Government Of The World,

- God's Will To The Rational Nature Of Mankind,

- God's Will Enacted For The Good Of The World,

- God's Will Which Shows Mankind The Way Of Joy And Peace.

Sin Is The Rejection Of The Divine Law,

Sin Is The Rejection Of The Divine Authority,

Sin Is The Rejection Of The Divine One Himself.

It Is An Opposition To The Divine Law:

Whosoever Commits Sin Transgresses The Law Because Sin Is Lawlessness.

BUT A Righteous Life Is A Distinguishing Mark One Has Been Born Of God.

1. HE CAME TO DELIVER US FROM MORAL FAILURE.

A. CHRIST APPEARED AND DEALT WITH THIS FAILURE.

B. CHRISTIANS ABIDE IN CHRIST AND DO NOT LIVE IN FAILURE.

THE OBLIGATION OF PURITY:

Anyone who rests this hope on Him purifies himself as He is pure.

Anyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

And you know that He appeared that He might take away our sin.

Anyone who abides in Him does not sin.

Anyone who sins has not seen Him and does not know Him.

The Christian is on the way to seeing God and being like Him.

There is nothing like a great aim for helping a man to resist temptation.

Sin Is Serious Rebellion Against God:

Lawlessness:

- Not Just Breaking Of God’s Law

- One Who Practices Sin Is In Revolt Against God

- Sin Is Nothing But Rebellion Against God.

- To Practice Sin Is To Be In Open Rebellion Against God Himself.

A Right Knowledge Of Sin Lies At The Root Of Biblical Christianity.

Satan's Strategy:

Satan Tells A Rebellious Person To Think More Highly Of Self Than They Ought:

- I May Not Be Perfect, But I’m Not A Wretched Sinner! 

Satan Pulls God Down From His Absolute Holiness:

- Surely, A Loving God Understands That I’m Only Human.

- He Wouldn’t Send Someone As Good As Me To Hell!

- He Wouldn’t Demand Perfect Righteousness, Would He?

Gnostic false teaching:

Teaches that moral failure doesn't matter.

Teaches that the body is evil,

Teaches that no harm in satisfying its lusts because what happens to it was of no importance.

They said that the truly spiritual man was so armored with the Spirit that he could sin to his heart's content.

Teaches that they Have Special Revelation Or Knowledge Of Christ.

The Apostle teaching:

A Sinful Live Betrays Oneself To Continue Living In Sin.

Anyone That Knows Jesus Christ As The Holy, Sinless Savior, Does Not Live In Sin.

Do Not Be Deceived: True Christians Practice Righteousness As Jesus Is Righteous.

MORAL FAILURE Is Totally Opposed To Jesus Christ (3:5).

Jesus Christ Did Not Come To This Earth Primarily To Give Us Moral Teaching

His Main Reason For Coming Was To Take Away Our Failures 

His Main Reason Was To Bear The Penalty In His Own Body On The Cross.

The Only Way That He Could Do This Was To Be Completely Sinless Himself.

Thus John Adds, “and In Him There Is No Sin.”

- Jesus Virgin Birth Through The Holy Spirit Preserved Him From Original Sin.

- Jesus Lived In Complete Obedience To God, So That Even His Enemies Could Not Convict Him Of Sin.

- Jesus Offered Himself As A Lamb Unblemished And Spotless. The Final And Complete Sacrifice For Our Sins.

If You Know These Truths, Then John’s Conclusion Is Inescapable:

2. HE CAME TO DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL.

A. THE DEVIL IS A DECEIVER, SO PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS.

B. THE DEVIL IS A TOTAL FAILURE WHO HAS BEEN DEFEATED.

Abides: Every Christian Abides In Christ.

The Word Abides In 3:6 Is Parallel To Is Born Of God In 3:9.

John Adds (3:6), “No One Who Sins Has Seen Him Or Knows Him.”

Because Of The Devilish Origin Of Sin And The Purpose Of Christ’s Appearing, True Christians Cannot Live In Moral Failure.

Sin Is Serious Because It Originates With The Devil

The One Who Practices A Lifestyle Of MORAL FAILURE Is Of Satan.

All People Into Two Camps: Those Who Practice Righteousness (3:7) And Those Who Practice Sin (3:8).

There Is No Third Camp For Those Who DO NOT Believe In Jesus, But Are Decent, Good People Who Never Hurt Anyone.

God Created Lucifer And All The Angels As Good,

Lucifer (Satan) Sinned Against God And Led A Rebellion.

Satan Says: I WILL,

Sin Says: I WILL,

God Says: MY WILL.

Sin Is Totally Opposed To The Purpose Of Christ’s Coming To Destroy The Works Of The Devil.

Christ Appeared To Take Away Our Failures.

Christ Came To Destroy Satan’s Works.

He Came To Pay The Penalty For Our Failures.

He Came To Break The Power Of Our Failures.

3. HE CAME TO MARK OUT THE CHILDREN OF GOD.

A. GOD'S CHILDREN HAVE EXPERIENCED A NEW BIRTH.

B. GOD'S CHILDREN DO NOT PRACTICE SIN.

C. GOD'S CHILDREN LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

A True Christian Does Not And Cannot Live In Sin (3:9-10).

Committing Individual Acts Of Sin OR As A Way Of Life?

It Is Impossible For A Child Of God To Persist In A Lifestyle Marked By Sin.

Not Talking About Sinless Perfection, But Rather About The Direction Of The Life Of A Believer.

If God Has Imparted New Life To You, So That You Have Become His Child, You Cannot Go On Living In Sin.

HE CHILDREN OF GOD AND THE CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL ARE DISTINGUISHED BY THE PRACTICE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND LOVE:

Attitude About The Lord's Return: Be Courageous Until He Returns.

1. LIVING AS CHILDREN OF GOD AWAITING HIS RETURN:

Remain In Fellowship With Christ So That When He Returns:

- We Will Be Full Of Courage and Confidence,

- We Will Not Shrink Back From Him In Shame.

We Know That Christ Is Righteous.

We Know That All Who Do What Is Right Are God’s Children.

We Know That We Shall Be Like Him Because We Shall See Him As He Is.

- See How Very Much Our Father Loves Us.

- He Calls Us His Children And That Is What We Are!

- The Evil World System Does Not Recognize That We Are God’s Children:

They Do Not Know Him;

They Do Not Recognize Him for who He Is.

We Have Been Adopted Into God’s Family; And We Are Officially His Children Now.

The Full Picture Of Our Destiny Is Not Yet Clear, But We Know This Much:

When Jesus Appears, We Will Be Like Him Because We Will See Him Just As He Is.

All Those Who Focus Their Hopes On Him And His Coming Seek To Purify Themselves Just As He Is Pure.

2. REMEMBER THE PRIVILEGES OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE:

John Begins By Demanding That His People Should Remember Their Privileges.

The Christian Has The Privilege Of Being Called The Child Of God.

To Bear The Name Of The Family Of God.

CALLED The Children Of God;

WE ARE The Children Of God.

A Gift Of God That A True Christian BECOMES A CHILD OF GOD.

By Nature Mankind Is Only A Creature Of God,

But It Is By Grace That One Becomes A Child Of God.

Two English Words Which Are Closely Connected But Whose Meanings Are Widely Different:

Paternity And Fatherhood:

Paternity: A Relationship In Which A Man Is Responsible For The Physical Existence Of A Child;

Fatherhood: An Intimate, Loving, Relationship.

There Are Two Pictures,

In The Old Testament There Is The Covenant Idea.

Israel Is The Covenant People Of God.

As An Integral Part Of The Covenant, God Gave To Israel His Law,

It Was Dependent On Keeping Of That Law In That Covenant Relationship.

In The New Testament There Is The Adoption Idea.

A Deliberate Act Of Adoption On The Part Of God The Christian Enters Into His Family.

Question: Why Are Christians Despised By The World?

Answer: Experiencing What Jesus Christ Has Already Experienced.

When He Came Into The World, He Was Not Recognized As The Son Of God;

The World Preferred Its Own Ideas And Rejected His;

The Same Will Happen To Any One Who Chooses To Truly Follow Him.

3. REMEMBER THE POSSIBILITIES OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE:

John Reminds His People Of The Privileges Of The Christian Life.

The Great Fact That This NEW Life Is Only A Beginning.

(a) When Christ Appears In His Glory, We Shall Be Like Him.

Mankind Was Made In The Image And In The Likeness Of God.

That Was God's Intention; And That Was Mankind's Destiny For Those That Believe in Jesus.

In Christ Mankind Will Finally Attain To The Image And The Likeness Of God.

(b) When Christ Appears, We Shall See Him And Be Like Him.

The End Of All Devotion Is To See God.

We Cannot Become Like God Unless We See Him;

And We Cannot See Him Unless We Are Pure In Heart,

For Only The Pure In Heart Shall See God.

In Order To See God, We Need The Purity Which Only He Can Give.

4. THIS IS ABOUT THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST:

What It Means To “Continue In Him” And Will Identify Ways In Which They Will Purify Themselves.

If We “continue In Him” We Will Not Be Ashamed When Jesus Returns.

Actions Related To “continuing” Include:

(1) Being Different From The World,

(2) Becoming Like Him,

(3) Purifying Yourself.

Focus On The Lord’s Coming:

Let's Quickly Recap What We Have Learned:

1. Continue In Him. (1 John 2:28)

The Contrast Between Confidence And Shame Is Significant;

Believers Who Abide In Christ, Practicing Righteousness (Right Words And Deeds);

Will Stand Before Their Lord With Confidence In The Day Of Judgment;

Those Who Have Failed To Abide In Obedience Will Suffer Shame;

If You Abide In Jesus Christ Now, You Will Be Bold When He Returns;

Believers Who Do NOT Abide In Jesus Christ Now Will Experience Shame When He Returns;

Believers Who Do Abide In Jesus Christ Now Will Be Bold And Confident When He Returns.

2. Do What Is Right. (1 John 2:29)

But Don’t Expect The World To Recognize You As A Beloved Child Of God;

A. The World Recognizes And Rewards Its Own;

B. Don’t Expect The World To Recognize Or Reward Your Righteousness;

C. Yet Never Forget The Joyful Privilege Of Being God’s Beloved Child.

3. We Shall Be Like Him! (1 John 3:2)

You Are Not Now What You One Day Will Be;

A. Your Refined Character, As God’s Child, Has Not Been Fully Revealed;

B. In That Day, When You See Jesus At His Return, You Will Be Like Him.

4. Purify Yourself. (1 John 3:3)

Purify Yourself In The Hope Of One Day Seeing Jesus;

A. Purify Your Moral Obedience;

B. Purify Your Relational Love;

C. Purify Your Confession Of Jesus As The Only Savior Of The World.

Dear Lord. Please Give Us The Strength and Courage To Continue in our journey of serving you until that wonderful day when we shall see you face to face. In Jesus name. Amen.

Attitude About The Truth: Guard Your Heart And Mind Against Error.

1. The Last Hour,The End Of This Age:

- And Just As You Heard That The Antichrist Is Coming,

- Even Now Many Antichrists (False Teachers) Have Appeared,

- Which Confirms Our Belief That It Is The Last Hour.

It Is Important That We Should Understand When John Speaks Of The Time Of The Last Hour.

The Idea Of The Last Days And Of The Last Hour Runs All Through The Bible;

But There Is A Most Interesting Development In Its Meaning:

(i) The Phrase Occurs Frequently In The Very Early Books Of The Old Testament.

Jacob Before His Death Assembles His Sons To Tell Them What Will Happen In The Last Days,

The Last Days Then: The People Of Israel Would Enter Into The Promised Land,

And Would At Last Enter Into Full Enjoyment Of The Promised Blessings Of God.

(ii) The Phrase Frequently Occurs In The Prophets.

In The Last Days God's Holy City Will Be Supreme;

And Israel Will Render To God The Perfect Obedience That He Deserves,

In The Last Days There Will Be The Supremacy Of God And The Obedience Of His People.

(iii) In The Times Between The Old And The New Testaments, The Last Days Become Associated With The Day Of The Lord.

This Is The More Deeply Interwoven Teaching In Scripture.

The Jews Had Come To Believe That All Time Was Divided Into Two Ages.

In Between THIS PRESENT AGE, Which Was Totally Evil,

And THE AGE TO COME, Which Was The Golden Time Of The Kingdom of God.

The Day Of The Lord, The Last Days, Would Be:

- A Time Of Terror, Of Cosmic Destruction And Of Judgment,

- The Birth pains Of The New Age.

THE LAST HOUR DOES NOT MEAN A TIME OF ANNIHILATION TO NOTHINGNESS AS IT WAS BEFORE CREATION.

In Biblical Thought The Last Time Is The End Of One Age And The Beginning Of Another.

It Is Last In The Sense That Things As They Are Pass Away; But It Leads Not To World Obliteration But To World Re-Creation.

Mankind Has The Choice To Align With The Old World Doomed To Destruction,

OR

To Align With Christ To Enter The New World.

IT DEPENDS ON WHETHER OR NOT WE GIVE OUR LIFE TO JESUS CHRIST.

THERE IS AN ETERNAL RELEVANCE: EVERY HOUR IS THE LAST HOUR: BECAUSE YOUR LAST DAY COULD BE TODAY !!

2, Warning Concerning Antichrists:

The Antichrist: The Spirit of Antichrist OR The Antichrist:

In This Verse We Meet The Concept Of Antichrist,

Antichrist Is A Word Which Occurs Only In John's Letters In The New Testament,

But It Is The Expression Of An Idea Which Is As Old As Religion Itself.

Anti: Against Or In Place Of:

Antichrist is the one Who Seeks to Put Himself in Place of Christ,

In Place of Christ in the Church / Christian Community,

Christ Is The Incarnation Of God And Goodness,

Antichrist Is The Incarnation Of The Devil And Evil,

The Incarnation Of Everything Which Was Opposed To God.

Antichrist May Be Not So Much A Person As A Principle,

All Through History There Have Been These Identifications Of Human Figures With Antichrist:

Napoleon, Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler, Have All In Their Day Received This Identification.

3. The Battle Of The Mind:

But You Have An Anointing From The Holy One,

You Have Been Set Apart, Specially Gifted And Prepared By The Holy Spirit,

And All Of You Know the Truth,

Because He Teaches Us, Illuminates Our Minds, And Guards Us From Error.

I Have Not Written To You Because You Do Not Know The Truth,

But Because You Do Know It, And Because No Lie Is Of The Truth.

WHO Is The Liar But The One Who Denies That Jesus Is The Christ,

This Is The Antichrist, The Enemy And Antagonist Of Christ,

The One Who Denies And Consistently Refuses To Acknowledge The Father And The Son.

Whoever Denies The Son Does Not Have The Father;

The One Who Confesses And Acknowledges The Son Has The Father Also.

John Has A View Of Antichrist Is:

• In The World,
• Is The False Belief,
• The Dangerous Teaching Of The Heretics.

The Church Had Been Well Forewarned That In The Last Days False Teachers Would Come.

Jesus Had Said, "Many Will Come In My Name, Saying, I Am He; And They Will Lead Many Astray"

Fierce Wolves Will Come In Among You, Not Sparing The Flock.

And From Among Your Own Selves Will Arise Men,

Speaking Perverse Things, To Draw Away The Disciples After Them.

John Did Not Think Of Antichrist As One Single Individual Figure,

But Rather As A Power Of Falsehood Speaking In And Through The False Teachers.

Just As The Holy Spirit Was Inspiring The True Teachers And The True Prophets,

So There Was An Evil Spirit Inspiring The False Teachers And The False Prophets.

The Great Interest And Relevance Of This Is That For John The Battleground Was In The Mind.

The Spirit Of Antichrist Was Struggling With The Spirit Of God For The Possession Of Men's Minds.

Force Of Evil Deliberately Seeking To Pervade Men's Minds; And There Is Nothing More Potent For Evil.

JOHN WAS NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAINTS BELIEVING A DIFFERENT GOSPEL BUT TOLERATING A DIFFERENT GOSPEL

4. The Sifting Of The Church:

They Went Out From Us,

Seeming At First To Be Christians,

But They Were Not Really Of Us,

Because They Were Not Truly Born Again And Spiritually Transformed,

For If They Had Been Of Us, They Would Have Remained With Us,

But They Went Out Teaching False Doctrine,

So That It Would Be Clearly Shown That None Of Them Are Of Us.

BUT YOU HAVE RECEIVED ANOINTING FROM THE HOLY ONE AND YOU ALL POSSESS KNOWLEDGE.

As For You, Let That Remain In You keeping In Your Hearts That Message Of Salvation,

Which You Heard From The Beginning and if it remains in you,

You Too Will Remain In The Son And In The Father forever.

The False Teachers Voluntarily Left The Christian Fellowship;

And That Fact Had Shown That They Did Not Really Belong There,

They Were Aliens And Their Own Conduct Had Shown It To Be So.

This passage describes the Sifting Of The Church,

the separation of the genuine from the counterfeit,

the possessors from the professors who do not possess.

In contrast Jesus declared that the wheat and the tares "would grow together until the harvest," and the counterfeit nature of the tares will not be apparent until the final harvest.

Who Is The Liar But The Man Who Denies That Jesus Is The Anointed One Of God !!

Antichrist Is He Who Denies The Father And The Son !!

Anyone Who Denies The Son Does Not Even Have The Father !!

And Everyone Who Acknowledges The Son Has The Father Also !!

JESUS SAID:

• No Man Knows The Father Except The Son And Him To Whom The Son Reveals That Knowledge,

• Believes In Me, Believes Not In Me But In Him Who Sent Me. And He Who Sees Me Sees Him Who Sent Me,
• Everyone Who Acknowledges Me Before Men, I Also Will Acknowledge Before My Father Who Is In Heaven,
• Whoever Denies Me Before Men, I Also Will Deny Before My Father Who Is In Heaven.

Jesus Claimed That A Man's Reaction To Him Is A Reaction To God,

That Reaction Settles His Destiny In Time And In Eternity.

5. The Universal Privilege:

If That Which You Have Heard From The Beginning Remains Within You,

You Too Will Remain In The Son And In The Father,

And This Is The Promise Which He Made To You: Eternal Life.

As For You, The Anointing Which You Received From Him Remains Permanently In You,

And You Have No Need For Anyone To Teach You,

But Just As His Anointing Teaches You About All Things,

And Is True And Is Not A Lie, And Just As His Anointing Has Taught You,

You Must Remain In Him.

I Am Writing These Things To You To Warn You About Those Who Are Seeking To Lead You Astray.

John Is Pleading With His People To Abide In The Things Which They Have Learned and if they do they abide in CHRIST.
