Passover Remembers The Deliverance Of Israel From Egypt.
THE PHRASE: THE DAY OF UNLEAVENED BREAD.
A Generic Description Of The Week-Long Feast.
It Originally Celebrated The Beginning Of Harvest.
But Later Was Combined With Passover.
THE CENTRAL ACT OF REDEMPTION.
IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.
NOW: A NEW CENTRAL ACT OF REDEMPTION.
FOR THE NEW TESTAMENT.
B. A MAN CARRYING A PITCHER:
This Was An Unusual Sight.
Carrying A Pitcher Was Typically A Woman’s Work.
Generally Men Carried Liquids In Animal’s Skin Containers.
This Would Be A Distinctive Sign To The Disciples.
C. THE TEACHER SAYS TO YOU:
The Scene Here Implies Secrecy.
Jesus Had Good Reason To Quietly Make Arrangements For Passover.
He Didn’t Want Judas To Betray Him Before He Met With The Disciples.
D. EAT THE PASSOVER WITH MY DISCIPLES:
Was The Last Supper Observed On The Same Day As The Passover ?
Was The Passover Meal The Same Day As The Crucifixion?
YES !!
The Passover Began Thursday Night 6 PM Until Friday Night 6 PM.
The PASSOVER Sacrificed Lamb = The CRUCIFIXION Sacrificed Lamb.
2. THE SUPPER.
THE LORD'S SUPPER.
JESUS EATS THE PASSOVER WITH HIS DISCIPLES.
THE INSTITUTION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER.
(22:14–20).
A. WITH FERVENT DESIRE I HAVE DESIRED:
AGAIN, THIS WAS A PASSIONATE MOMENT FOR JESUS.
He Arrived At The Central Reason Why He Came To Man.
To Institute A New Covenant With Men Based On His Own Sacrifice.
THIS WAS NOT THE BEGINNING OF THE END.
IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE BEGINNING.
B. I WILL NOT DRINK OF THIS CUP UNTIL THE COMING OF THE KINGDOM.
Jesus Has Not Yet Celebrated A Communion In Heaven.
He Is Waiting For All His People To Be Gathered To Him.
There Will Be A Great Supper.
THE MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB.
(Revelation 19:9).
THIS IS THE FULFILLMENT IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
JESUS REINTERPRETS PASSOVER.
INSTITUTING THE NEW COVENANT.
HE TOOK BREAD, GAVE THANKS AND BROKE IT, AND GAVE IT TO THEM:
The
Bread Was Lifted Up At Passover.
The Head Of The Ceremony Said:
This Is The Bread Of Affliction.
Our Fathers Ate This Bread Of Affliction In The Land Of Egypt.
Let Everyone Who Hungers Come And Eat.
Let Everyone Who Is Needy Come And Eat The Passover Meal.
Everything Eaten At The Passover Meal Had Symbolic Meaning.
The Feast Commemorated The Greatest Event In The History Of Israel.
The Deliverance From Slavery In Egypt.
And When The Israelites Had Fled From Egypt.
FIRST, THEY HAD TO FLEE IN HASTE.
Exodus 12: They Did Not Have Time To Bake Leavened Bread.
Dough Without Leaven Cooks Very Quickly,
But Produces A Substance More Like A Water Biscuit Than A Loaf.
That Is What Unleavened Bread Is Like.
So The Leaven Was Banished And The Bread Unleavened.
This Was To Repeat The Acts Of The Night They Left Egypt.
SECOND, LEAVEN IS THE SYMBOL OF CORRUPTION.
Leaven Is Fermented Dough.
The Jews Identified This With Fermentation And Decay.
So Leaven Stood For All That Was Rotten And Corrupt.
Therefore As A Sign Of Purification It Was Removed From
Process.
SO, WHAT PREPARATIONS DID THE DISCIPLES MAKE?
On The Thursday Morning:
They Would Prepare The Unleavened Bread.
They Would Make Sure All Leaven Was Removed From The Process.
The Other Staple Ingredient Of The Feast Was The Passover LAMB.
Thursday Night: TIME FRAME FOR THE CELEBRATION:
ON THE THURSDAY AFTERNOON:
THE LAMB HAD TO BE TAKEN TO THE TEMPLE AND SLAIN.
ITS BLOOD HAD TO BE OFFERED TO GOD IN SACRIFICE.
IT WAS FROM THE LAMB THAT THE FEAST TOOK ITS NAME.
The Last Terrible Plague Which Fell On The Egyptians.
The Plague That Compelled Them To Let The People Go.
The Angel Of Death Passed Through The Land Of Egypt.
The Angel Of Death Killed The Firstborn Son In Every House.
The Angel Of Death Would PASSOVER Specific Homes:
WHICH HOME: Having Lamb's Blood Spread Over Door Posts.
So
That The Angel Of Death Seeing That Sign Would PASSOVER That House
(Exodus 12:21-23).
THERE WERE 4 OTHER ITEMS NECESSARY FOR THE FEAST.
(i) A Bowl Of Salt Water Had To Be Set Upon The Table, To Remind Them Of The Tears They Had Shed.
While They Were Slaves In Egypt And Of The Salt Waters Of The Red Sea Through Which God's Hand Had Wondrously Brought Them.
(ii) A Collection Of Bitter Herbs Had To Be Prepared.
This Was Again To Remind Them Of The Bitterness Of Slavery, And Of The Bunch Of Hyssop With Which The Blood Of The Lamb Had Been Smeared On The Lintel And The Door-Posts.
(iii) A Paste From A Mixture Of Apples, Dates, Nuts And Edible Fruit.
It Was To Remind Them Of The Clay With Which They Had Been Compelled To Make Bricks In Egypt.
And Through It There Were Sticks Of Cinnamon To Remind Them Of The Straw With Which The Bricks Had Been Made.
(iv) Lastly, There Were Four Cups Of Wine.
These Were To Remind Them Of THE FOUR PROMISES:
THE FOUR PROMISES IN EXODUS 6: I WILL:
a. BRING YOU OUT FROM THE BURDEN OF THE EGYPTIANS.
b. DELIVER YOU FROM THEIR BONDAGE.
c. REDEEM YOU WITH AN EXTENDED ARM OF PROTECTION.
d. TAKE YOU FOR MY PEOPLE AND I WILL BE YOUR GOD.
NOTE: THE PROPHETS USED SYMBOLISM TO MAKE SURE THAT THEIR MESSAGE WAS COMMUNICATED CLEARLY:
(i)
The Passover Feast Was A Commemoration Of Deliverance.
Its Whole Intention Was To Remind The People Of Israel
God Had Liberated Them From Slavery In Egypt.
First And Foremost:
JESUS CLAIMED TO BE OUR DELIVERER.
He Came To Liberate Us From Fear And From Sin.
He Liberates Us From The Fears Which Haunt Us.
He Liberates Us And From The Sins Which Will Not Let Us Go.
(ii) In Particular The Passover Lamb Was The Symbol Of Safety.
Passover Night: The Blood Of The Passover Lamb Kept Israel Safe.
SO, JESUS CLAIMED TO BE OUR SAVIOR.
He Came To Save Us From Our Sins.
He Came To Save Us From The Consequences Of Sin.
He Came To Giv e Us Safety On Earth And Safety In Heaven.
Safety In Time And Safety In Eternity.
HIS BODY AND HIS BLOOD.
INSTITUITION OF THE LORD'S SUPPER.
BREAD: THIS IS MY BODY.
CUP: THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE COVENANT.
IT IS POURED OUT FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SIN.
THE MEMORIAL OF JESUS AND HIS WORK ON THE CROSS.
A Key Word And Enshrines The Whole Work And Intention Of JESUS:
IT IS THE WORD COVENANT.
Jesus Spoke Of His Blood Being The Blood Of The Covenant.
WHAT DID HE MEAN BY THAT?
A Covenant Is A Relationship Between Two People.
The Covenant Was Not Between Man And Man.
A New Relationship Between God And Man.
WHAT JESUS WAS SAYING AT THE LAST SUPPER WAS THIS:
BECAUSE OF MY LIFE.
AND ABOVE ALL BECAUSE OF MY DEATH.
A NEW RELATIONSHIP HAS BECOME POSSIBLE.
BETWEEN YOU AND GOD.
YOU HAVE SEEN ME. AND IN ME YOU HAVE SEEN GOD.
I Have Told You, I Have Shown You How Much God Loves You.
He Loves You Even Enough To Allow This Shame.
THAT IS WHAT GOD IS LIKE.
THE WAY FOR US IS OPEN THIS NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.
THE PASSOVER CREATED A NATION:
A Slave People Were Freed From Egypt.
And Became A Nation.
THIS NEW PASSOVER ALSO CREATES A PEOPLE:
Those United In Jesus Christ.
Remembering And Trusting His Sacrifice.
THE PASSOVER: A NEW NATION.
THE COMMUNION: A NEW CREATION.
THE COMMISSION: A NEW EXPECTATION.
JESUS TEACHES US TO COMMEMORATE:
NOT HIS BIRTH,
NOT HIS LIFE,
NOT HIS MIRACLES,
BUT HIS DEATH.
THIS CUP IS THE NEW COVENANT IN MY BLOOD:
Jesus Announced The Institution Of A New Covenant.
No Mere Man Could Ever Institute A New Covenant.
Because Jesus Is The God-Man.
He Has The Authority To Establish A New Covenant.
Sealed With Blood.
Even As The Old Covenant Was Sealed With Blood.
(Exodus 24:8).
THE NEW COVENANT CONCERNS
AN INNER TRANSFORMATION
THAT CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN.
For I Will Forgive Their Iniquity,
And Their Sin I Will Remember No More.
(Jeremiah 31:34).
This Transformation Puts God’s Word And Will In Us:
I Will Put My Law In Their Minds,
And Write It On Their Hearts.
This Covenant Is All About A New Relationship With God.
I Will Be Their God And They Shall Be My People.
(Jeremiah 31:33).
WHY A NEW COVENANT BETWEEN GOD AND HIS PEOPLE ?
WHY WASN’T THE MOSAIC (OLD) COVENANT SUFFICIENT ?
It Provided An Unprecedented Blessing For The People Of Israel.
It Provided Them With Laws To Govern Their Behavior.
It Promised Them Spiritual And Material And Even Military Blessings.
It Required: To Obey That Law And Remained True To The Covenant.
God Instituted In That Covenant The Office Of High Priest.
The People Would Have Someone To Offer Sacrifices On Their Behalf
The People Would Have Someone To Represent Them In God's Presence.
That Old Covenant Provided A Sacrificial System.
The Blood Of Bulls And Goats TEMPORARILY Enabled Fellowship With God.
The Old Covenant Under Moses Was Filled With Grace, Mercy, Patience, Love.
SO, THE OLD OR MOSAIC COVENANT WAS DESIGNED THIS WAY.
THERE WOULD BE 3 ISSUES TO BE RESOLVED IN THE FUTURE.
1. Animal Sacrifice For Their Sins Could Not Secure Forgiveness.
It Is Impossible For The Blood Of Bulls And Goats To Take Away Sins.
(Heb. 10:4).
2. The Old Covenant Could Not Secure Power To Obey The Law.
It Did Not Provide The Spiritual Power To Needed To Obey It.
3. The Old Or Mosaic Covenant Was Temporary.
God Never Intended For The Old Covenant To Last Forever.
He Never Intended For It To Be The Final Revelation Of His Will For Mankind.
Everything Moses Did In Constructing The Old Covenant
Tabernacle, Together With Its Rituals And Sacrifices, Was Only
“A Copy And Shadow Of The Heavenly Things.”
(Hebrews 8:5-7).
GOD ALWAYS INTENDED TO ESTABLISH A NEW COVENANT.
This New Covenant Provided The High Priesthood Of Jesus.
It Is Superior To The High Priesthood Of Aaron And Family.
IT COMES THE PROMISE OF AN INTERNAL POWER.
Our Obedience Will Flow From A Transformation That Has
Occurred Within Us By Virtue Of A Power That God Has Himself Provided.
The Law Of God Placed On Their Minds And Written On Their Hearts.
(Ezek. 36:26-27).
I
Will Put My Laws Into Their Minds, And Write Them On Their Hearts.
(Heb. 8:10b).
THE
LAW OF THE OLD COVENANT WAS NEVER A MEANS TO SALVATION;
IT LED TO CONDEMNATION.
IT PROVES THAT NO ONE IS ABLE TO LIVE UP TO THE LAW.
IT LED TO ONE REALIZING THE NEED FOR SALVATION.
THE BLOOD OF JESUS MADE THE NEW COVENANT POSSIBLE.
IT MADE IT SURE AND RELIABLE.
IT IS CONFIRMED WITH THE LIFE OF GOD HIMSELF.
3. THE BETRAYAL.
THE HINT OF THE BETRAYAL.
WOE TO THE BETRAYER.
(22:21–23).
A. BEHOLD, THE HAND OF MY BETRAYER IS AT THIS TABLE:
This Would Seem To Indicate That Judas Was Present When
Jesus Passed The Bread And The Cup To His Disciples.
B. THE SON OF MAN GOES AS IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED:
It Was Determined By Prophecy That The Messiah Should Be
Betrayed.
(Psalm 41:9).
Nevertheless, Woe To That Man Who Actually Betrayed The Messiah.
Judas Could Never Claim That He Helped Jesus By Fulfilling Prophecy.
He Was And Is Fully Accountable For His Sin Before God.
C.
THEY BEGAN TO QUESTION AMONG THEMSELVES:
Judas Kept His Secret Well.
Because None Of The Other Disciples Seemed To Suspect Him.
