Genesis 27 | Jacob And The Stolen Blessing

 PREVIOUSLY:

THE OFFICIAL RATIFICATION OF THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT.

A PROMISED SON.

A PROMISED NATION.

Abraham Was Not Saved By Works But By Faith ALONE;

Yet He Later Proved The Reality Of His Faith Through His Works. (James 2:21-24).

ABRAHAM WAS SAVED:
BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH ALONE IN GOD ALONE.

NO WORKS, NO MERIT,

GOD SAVED HIM, HE DIDN'T SAVE HIMSELF.

AND GOD WHO MADE HIM A PROMISE THROUGH:

HIS SPOKEN WORD, WHICH BECAME

HIS INSCRIPTURED WORD, WHICH IS

HIS INCARNATE WORD, WHICH IS

REVEALED TO US AS JESUS CHRIST.

Old Testament Believers Were Saved:

By Believing In God Who WOULD Send His Son.

Were Saved In God's Promise Of Redemption.

Through The Messiah Who WOULD Come.

New Testament Believers Are Saved:

By Believing In The Son Whom God HAS Sent.

Are Saved In God's Promise Of Redemption.

Through The Messiah Who HAS Come.

One Looks Forward To The Cross,

The Other Looks Back To The Cross.

THE SEED (OR SON) AND THE LAND.

1. The Seed OR Son.

WE KNOW THAT SEED TO BE JESUS PER GALATIANS 3:16.

God Says: UNTO YOUR SEED I HAVE GIVEN THE LAND.

2. The Land.

WE KNOW IT AS THE PROMISED LAND !!

THEN, God’s Sign Of The Covenant:

His New Name Abraham Meant:

FATHER OF MANY NATIONS.

THEN, God Explained The SIGN:

CIRCUMCISION IS THE SIGN OF THIS COVENANT.

God Again Repeats To Abraham That In Isaac And ISAAC ALONE The Covenant Would Be Fulfilled.

THEN, TESTINGS WITHIN THE COVENANT.

Saved By Grace Through Faith ALONE,

Being Included The Covenant,

Does Not Exempt A Person From Testings In His Life.

Tests To Believer's Faith Determine The Genuineness Of Faith.

NOW,

JACOB AND THE STOLEN BLESSING: GEN 27:

JACOB'S LIE:

MAIN IDEA OF TEXT:

WHEN WE SEEK OUR OWN WAY,

WE WILL NEVER GET WHAT WE WANT,

WE WILL ALWAYS PAY THE PRICE.

OUTLINE:

I. ISAAC OLD AGE AND REQUEST (27:1–4).

II. REBEKAH AND JACOB PLOT (27:5–17).

III. ISAAC AND JACOB (27:18–29).

IV. JACOB AND ESAU (27:30–46).

So, Genesis 26 AND 27:

Give Insight Into:
Believers Are Still Prone To Rationalize Sin.
God's Sovereign Plans And Purposes Can't Be Defeated.

Isaac's Life: Chapter 26:
He Is Overshadowed By Abraham.
And In The Background To Jacob.

He Was The Ordinary Son Of A Great Father.
And The Ordinary Father Of A Great Son.

He Was A True Believer.
And His Life Had A Definite Purpose.

1. ISAAC OLD AGE AND REQUEST (27:1–4):

ISAAC FIGHTS AGAINST GOD'S WILL:

Isaac Grew Older: Decided To Give Birthright To Esau.

Isaac Knew: God Desired The Birthright Was For Jacob.
(Gen. 25:23).

Isaac Was Partial: To Esau.

Isaac Tries: To Overrule God's Plan.

Note.
Esau Knew Of God's Purpose.
Esau Sold His Birthright.
Esau Married A Canaanite Woman.
Esau Still Wanted The Birthright.
Esau Went Along With Isaac's Plot.
Esau Too Tried To Thwart The Will Of God.

ISAAC OLD AGE AND REQUEST (27:1–4):

NOW,

II. REBEKAH AND JACOB PLOT (27:5–17):

REBEKAH OPERATES IN THE FLESH:

Rebekah:
Overheard Isaac And Esau Conspiring.
Thought She Could Help Devise A Way To Keep Jacob's Birthright.
Thought God's Plan Were In Danger.
Thought She Could Help God Out.
Thought That God DID NOT Remember His Promise.
Thought That God WOULD NOT Keep His Promise.

Note:
The Plot To Disguise Jacob As Esau Was Questioned At First By Jacob.
He Feared Being CURSED Rather Than BLESSED.
Rebekah Dominated Him And Was So Deceitful.
Rebekah Therefore Persuaded Him To Carry Out Her Plans.
The Deceitful Side Of Jacob Came From His Mother Rebekah.

ISAAC OLD AGE AND REQUEST (27:1–4).

REBEKAH AND JACOB PLOT (27:5–17).

NOW,

III. ISAAC AND JACOB (27:18–29).

JACOB SINS BY LYING:

Jacob Impersonates His Brother.
Isaac Gives Him The Birthright.
Jacob's Actions Were Despicable.

First Jacob Impersonates His Brother Isaac.
Jacob Tells Lies To His Father.
Then Even Brings In The Name Of The Lord God.
(27:20).

Wonder Why God Permitted The Action Of JACOB?
Sovereign God Allows Many Things To Carry Our His Will.

All Should Have Been Patient And Waited On God.

ISAAC OLD AGE AND REQUEST (27:1–4).

REBEKAH AND JACOB PLOT (27:5–17).

ISAAC AND JACOB (27:18–29).

NOW,

IV. JACOB AND ESAU (27:30–46).

Isaac Blesses Jacob And Gives Him The Birthright.

Esau Returns With The Cooked Stew.
Esau And Isaac Discover: Jacob Has The Birthright.
Esau Realized The Loss Of Blessings.
Esau Was Furious And Blames Jacob For Everything.

But Isn't It Interesting:
Esau Forgot Or Did Not Want To Remember That He Sold His Birthright For Some Stew.

Fact:
Esau Willingly Sold His Birthright.
Esau Tried To Blame Others For His Rebellion To God
Esau Was Mad Enough To Kill.
Esau Determines To Murder Jacob After His Father Dies.

Rebekah Hears Of This And Tells Her Son Jacob.
Rebekah Was Very Possessive Over Jacob.
Rebekah Wanted Jacob To Flee.

Rebekah Did NOT Realize:
Jacob Would Not Be There Only A FEW DAYS.
Jacob Would Not See Her Again.

LESSONS FROM CHAPTER 27.

WHAT DOES GOD TEACH US FROM THIS WHOLE STORY?

1. WHAT WE SOW WE REAP.
Isaac Sinned And God Did Not Use Him For 40 Years.
Rebekah Sinned And God Took Jacob From Her.
Rebekah Would Never Jacob Again.
Esau Sinned And Never Regained His Birthright.
Esau Became Hardened And Never Believed In God.

Jacob Sinned By Lying And Deceit.
The Next 20 Years He Would Be Cheated And Swindled By His Uncle Laban.

Be Sure Your Sin Will Find You Out.
(Numbers 32:23).
Look At The History Of Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Esau.
Their Sins In Some Respect Followed Them Till Death.

2. THE END NEVER JUSTIFIES THE MEANS.
It Is Never Right To Do Evil That Good May Come.
All Of Our Means Should Honor God.
God Is Honored When Things Are Done Right.
Trickery, Deceit, Fraud Are Never Blessed Of God.

Let Us Not Do Evil That Good May Come.
(Romans 3:8).

Lofty Purposes Have Been Associated With The Most Sordid Of Methods.
Yet Clearly One Of These Words Always Contradicts The Other.
If A Thing Is Pious It Cannot Be A Fraud;
If A Thing Is A Fraud It Cannot Be Pious.
We Dare Not Win Victories For Christ By Any Unworthy Efforts.

3. THE LORD IS IN CONTROL.
The Lord Reigns.
It Is Utterly Futile To Suppose That We Can Thwart The Divine Purpose.
A Man's Heart Devises His Way But The Lord Directs His Steps.
(Proverbs 16:9).

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BLESSING AND A BIRTHRIGHT (GENESIS 25)?

When twins Jacob and Esau were born, Esau came first, technically making him the firstborn.
As the firstborn son, Esau held the BIRTHRIGHT.

A Birthright Was An Honor Given To The Firstborn.
The Head Of Household Status.
The Right To Inherit His Father’s Estate.

The Son With The Birthright Would Receive A Double Portion Of Whatever Was Passed Down.

Even Before The Twins Were Born, The Lord
Predicted That Esau Would Serve Jacob.

A Blessing Could Be Given Regardless Of Birthright.
However, A Greater Blessing Was Given To
The One Who Held The Birthright.

WHY WAS A FATHER’S BLESSING SO HIGHLY
VALUED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT?

Genesis: The blessing of a father to his sons.
The patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
All gave formal blessings to their children.

1. RECEIVING A BLESSING FROM ONE’S FATHER
WAS A HIGH HONOR, AND LOSING A BLESSING
WAS EQUAL TO A CURSE.

An Old Testament Blessing Of A Father To His Sons
Included Words Of Encouragement,
Details Regarding Each Son’s Inheritance,
And Prophetic Words Concerning The Future.

For Example, Isaac’s Blessing On Jacob
(which Was Meant For Esau) Gave Him The
Earth’s Bounty And Authority Over His Brother.

It Also Promised That Those Who Blessed Jacob
Would Be Blessed, And Those Who Cursed Him
Would Receive A Curse.

2. THE BLESSING ALSO INCLUDED A PREDICTION
THAT KINGS WOULD COME FROM JUDAH AND
THAT ONE KING WOULD EVENTUALLY RECEIVE
THE OBEDIENCE OF THE NATIONS”.

Judah’s Descendants Later Became The Tribe
From Which King David Came.
And In Whose Land Jerusalem Was Located.
Jesus Christ Came From The Tribe Of Judah.
