The Authority Of The King | Matthew 21 - 22:14

A. JESUS CLAIMS HIS KINGSHIP.

THE BEGINNING OF THE LAST WEEK BEFORE THE CROSS.

(MATT. 21:1-11)

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY.

THE INTENTION OF JESUS.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS MESSIAHSHIP.

B. JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE.

THE SCENE IN THE TEMPLE.

(MATT. 21:12-17)

HYPOCRISY IN TWO FORMS.

THE WRATH AND THE LOVE.

THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SIMPLE IN HEART.

C. JESUS CURSES THE FIG TREE.

THE WAY OF THE FIG TREE.

(MATT. 21:18-22)

HYPOCRISY IN THE OTHER FORM.

PROMISE WITHOUT PERFORMANCE.

THE DYNAMIC OF PRAYER.

D. JESUS COMMENTS TO THE JEWISH LEADERS.

THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS CHALLENGED.

(MATT. 21:23-46)

THE REJECTION OF JESUS.

THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS.

THE PARABLE OF THE TENANTS.

THE VINEYARD OF THE LORD.

PRIVILEGE AND RESPONSIBILITY.

THE SYMBOL OF THE STONE.

E. PARABLE OF THE WEDDING BANQUET.

(MATT. 22:1–14)

A. THE BEGINNING OF THE LAST WEEK BEFORE THE CROSS.

(MATT. 21:1-11)

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY.

THE INTENTION OF JESUS.

THE CLAIM OF THE KING.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS MESSIAHSHIP.

1. (1-6) JESUS INSTRUCTS HIS DISCIPLES REGARDING PREPARATION FOR HIS TRIUMPHAL ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM.

Jesus Sent Two Disciples And You Will Find A Donkey And A Colt.

Loose Them And Bring Them To Me.

And If Anyone Says Anything To You, You Shall Say:

The Lord Has Need Of Them. And Immediately He Will Send Them.

ALL THIS WAS DONE THAT IT MIGHT BE FULFILLED.

IT WAS SPOKEN BY THE PROPHET SAYING:

BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, LOWLY.

AND SITTING ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A DONKEY.

Jesus Knew The Religious Leaders In Jerusalem Were Going To:

ARREST HIM AND CONDEMN HIM AND MOCK HIM.

SCOURGE HIM AND DELIVER HIM FOR CRUCIFIXION. YET :

HE HAD THE COURAGE TO ENTER JERUSALEM.

HE HAD THE COURAGE TO ENTER IN AS PUBLIC A WAY AS POSSIBLE.

HE PLANNED RIDE ON A COLT WAS A PARABLE ILLUSTRATED.

A Deliberate Act Of Self-Disclosure.

THE SECRECY WAS NOT BEING LIFTED.

TWO PROPHECIES:

ZECHARIAH 9:9

THE COMING KING OF ZION

REJOICE GREATLY, O DAUGHTER OF ZION!

SHOUT ALOUD, O DAUGHTER OF JERUSALEM!

BEHOLD, AYOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU;

RIGHTEOUS AND HAVING SALVATION IS HE,

HUMBLE AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY,

ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A DONKEY.

THE PROPHECY OF DANIEL’S SEVENTY WEEKS.

SCHOLARS SAY:

FULFILLED TO THE EXACT DAY ON HIS TRIUMPHAL ENTRY.

DANIEL 9:24–25

SEVENTY WEEKS ARE DECREED

ABOUT YOUR PEOPLE AND YOUR HOLY CITY,

TO FINISH THE TRANSGRESSION,

TO PUT AN END TO SIN, LAND TO ATONE FOR INIQUITY,

TO BRING IN EVERLASTING RIGHTEOUSNESS,

TO SEAL BOTH VISION AND PROPHET,

AND TO ANOINT A MOST HOLY PLACE.

         KNOW THEREFORE AND UNDERSTAND

THAT FROM THE GOING OUT OF THE WORD

TO RESTORE AND BUILD JERUSALEM

TO THE COMING OF AN ANOINTED ONE,

A PRINCE, THERE SHALL BE SEVEN WEEKS.

2. (7-11) JESUS RECEIVES AND ENCOURAGES ADORATION AS THE MESSIAH.

Hosanna To The Son Of David !

Blessed Is He Who Comes In The Name Of The Lord !

Hosanna In The Highest !

Laid Their Clothes On The Road;

The Act Of Spreading Out The Garment Was One Of Recognition, Loyalty And Promise Of Support.

Cut Down Branches From The Trees And Spread Them On The Road:

Carrying Palm And Other Branches Was Symbolic Of Victory And Success.

All This Was Done To Honor Jesus As A Great, Triumphant Person Coming Into Jerusalem In The Season Of Passover.

In One Way, This Crowd Was Glorious.

It Is A Mark Of Christ’s Presence When The Church Becomes Enthusiastic.

HOSANNA TO THE SON OF DAVID!

THIS WAS OPEN MESSIANIC ADORATION OF JESUS.

THEY LOOK TO JESUS FOR SALVATION.

HOSANNA MEANS SAVE NOW !!

THESE ARE TITLES APPROPRIATE FOR THE MESSIAH.

SON OF DAVID… HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD.

JESUS RECEIVED AND INDEED ENCOURAGED THIS WORSHIP.

B. THE SCENE IN THE TEMPLE.

(MATT. 21:12-17)

THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE.

THE LOVE FOR THE CHILDREN.

THE WRATH OF THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS.

1. (12-13) STOPS THE MONEYCHANGING IN THE TEMPLE.

Drove Out All Those Who Bought And Sold In The Temple.

The Merchants Cheated Visitors To Jerusalem.

You Had To Buy Approved Sacrificial Animals At High Prices.

ALMOST 20 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE.

BUT ALSO FROM THE FALSE WORSHIP FROM GOD’S OWN PEOPLE.

My House Shall Be Called A House Of Prayer.

The Place Of Prayer Was Made Into A Marketplace Of Greedy Thieves.

2. (14) CONTINUES ON WITH GOD’S COMPASSIONATE WORK THERE.

The Blind And The Lame Were Restricted To The Court Of The Gentiles.

They Could Not Go Closer To The Temple.

They Could Not Go To The Altar To Sacrifice.

After Purging The Court Jesus Then Ministered To The Outcasts.

Jesus Was Doing The Business Of The Messiah.

Showing The Power Of God In The Context Of Compassion And Mercy.

3. (15-17) CAUSES ANGER FROM THE JEWISH LEADERS.

They Were Indignant:

This Was Their Response To The Wonderful Things That He Did.

Praise To Jesus Angered Them Starting With Praise By Children.

The Hypocrisy Of The Religious Leaders Is Evident.

Greed And Theft In The Temple Didn’t Bother Them.

C. THE WAY OF THE FIG TREE.

(MATT. 21:18-22)

THE CURSING OF THE FIG TREE.

PROMISE WITHOUT PERFORMANCE.

JESUS REBUKES A FIG TREE.

Let No Fruit Grow On You Ever Again:

His Curse Made The Fig Tree To Wither Away.

Found Nothing On It But Leaves.

This Explains Why Jesus Did This Destructive Miracle.

The Tree Was A Picture Of False Advertising, Having Leaves, But No Figs.

FIG TREE ILLUSTRATES:

Warn Of Coming Judgment Upon An Unfruitful Israel.

It Showed God’s Disapproval Of People Who Are All Leaves And No Fruit.

The Story Is Clear And Simple, And Its Point Is Obvious,.

D. THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS CHALLENGED.

(MATT. 21:23-46)

THE COMMENTS TO THE JEWISH LEADERS.

THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS.

THE PARABLE OF THE TENANTS.

PRIVILEGE AND RESPONSIBILITY.

THE SYMBOL OF THE STONE.

THREE PARABLES ACCUSED THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS.

IN THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS.

(Matt. 21:28-32).

The Religious Leaders Are An Unsatisfactory Son

Who Did Not Do His Father's Will.

IN THE PARABLE OF THE WICKED TENANTS.

(Matt. 21:33-46).

The Religious Leaders Are The Wicked Tenants.

IN THE PARABLE OF THE KING'S FEAST.

(Matt. 22:1-14).

The Religious Leaders Are The Condemned Guests.

1. (23-27) JESUS IS QUESTIONED BY THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS.

The Religious Leaders Confronted Him As He Was Teaching:

BY WHAT AUTHORITY DO YOU DO THESE MIRACLES ??

The Religious Leaders Did Not Know The Answer.

They Answered Questions From Jesus With Political Bias.

They Didn’t Seem Interested In Answering This Question Honestly.

The Leaders Cared More About Man's Opinion Than The Will Of God.

JESUS DIDN’T ANSWER THEIR QUESTION TO HIM.

The Religious Leaders:

Could Not Say OF MEN For They Were Cowards.

Would Not Say OF HEAVEN For They Were Hypocrites.

Jesus:
Was Patient With The Hurting People.

Was Impatient With The Religious Leaders.

2. (28-32) THE PARABLE OF THE TWO SONS.

A MAN HAD TWO SONS:

This Parable Shows Us Two Different Kinds Of Sons.

The Father Had A Right To The Services Of Both His Sons.

It Was Good And Right For The Father To Expect The Sons To Work.

First Son: Go Work Today In My Vineyard.

He Did Not Speak To The Sons Together.

Though The Same Invitation Was Given To Both Sons.

Second Son: Said Likewise: Go Work Today In My Vineyard.

It Was An Individual Call To Work.

The APPEAL:

From Father To Son.

Work In Father's Business Not Some Other Business.

Work Today Not Later.

First Son: I WILL NOT.

But Afterwards He Regretted It And Went Out From There.

He Answered And Said: I WILL GO AND HE DID GO.

Second Son: I WILL.

Said The Right Thing And He Said It With Respect.

But Afterwards He Did Not Do What He Said He Would.

There Are Many That Imitate The Second Son.

· They Admit That The Word Of God Is True.

· They Intend To Get Serious About It Someday.

· They Talk About Doing The Father’s Work.

· They Think That Words And Promises Are Enough.

They Talk Of Repenting, But They Do Not Repent.

They Speak Of Believing, But They Never Believe.

They Think Of Submitting To God But They Have Not Submitted.

WHICH OF THE TWO DID THE WILL OF HIS FATHER?

The Point Of This Parable Is Clear.

What Matters Is Living For God Not Saying The Right Words.

The Religious Leaders Were Good At Talking Righteous Talk.

NOTE:

THE JEWISH LEADER WAS AN UNSATISFACTORY SON WHO DID NOT DO HIS FATHER'S WILL.

THE FATHER'S VINEYARD WAS HIS TRUE KINGDOM.

3. (33-41) THE PARABLE OF THE WICKED TENANTS.

A Landowner Prepared His Vineyard Carefully.

GOD.

Hired Men To Manage It. (VINEDRESSERS).

RELIGIOUS LEADERS.

The Vinedressers Mistreated And Killed The Landowner's Messengers.

PROPHETS.

Landowner Sent His Son And Vinedressers Killed Him.

Foolishly Believing They Would Take Control Of The Vineyard.

JESUS.

The Response Of The Landowner.

JUDGE AND DESTROY THEIR APOSTATE RELIGIOUS SYSTEM.

NOTE:

The Old Testament Used The Picture Of A Vineyard To Speak Of Israel.

The Message Of This Parable Is Clear Enough.

The Religious Leaders Understood What The Wicked Servants Deserved.

Those Who Rebel Against Their Master This Way Deserve Judgment.

The Owner Of The Vineyard Had The Right To Expect Fruit.

God Looked For Fruit From Israel’s Leadership But Found Little.

The Owner Of The Vineyard Hired Other Vinedressers.

4. (42-46) JESUS WARNS THE LEADERS OF THEIR REJECTION.

Psalm 118:

Rejection Of Him Said More About Their Guilt And Coming Judgment.

Though They Reject Him He Is Still The Chief Cornerstone.

He Is Fulfilling The Great Messianic Prophecy Of Psalm 118.

These Leaders Who Rejected Jesus Had To Hear The Eventual Consequences Of Their Rejection.

Clearly, Jesus Claimed To Be:

The Rejected Stone God Appointed To Become The Chief Cornerstone.

The Stone Of Isaiah That People Stumble Over.

The Foundation Stone And Precious Cornerstone.

The Stone That Destroys The World In Rebellion To God.

Jesus Warned:

Continued Rejection Of God And His Messiah,

They Could Expect That God Would Pass The Leadership To Others.

THE CHOICE BEFORE THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND US !!

BE BROKEN IN HUMBLE SURRENDER BEFORE GOD

OR BE COMPLETELY BROKEN IN JUDGMENT.

They Sought To HARM Him:

Instead Of Repenting, The Religious Leaders Responded With Anger,

NOTE:

AGAIN: THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS ARE THE WICKED TENANTS.

MATTHEW 22 – JESUS ANSWERS AND ASKS DIFFICULT QUESTIONS

A. THE PARABLE OF THE WEDDING FEAST.

1. (1-3) THE FIRST INVITATION IS REFUSED.

Jesus Continued To Explain The Danger Of Rejecting Him.

A Certain King Who Arranged A Marriage For His Son:

The Wedding Of A Prince Would Be PRIVILEDGE TO BE INVITED.

They Were Not Willing To Come: It Seems Strange To Refuse The Invite.

2. (4-7) THE SECOND INVITATION IS REFUSED AND THE KING REACTS.

Tell Those Who Are Invited: SEE I HAVE PREPARED.

The King Persisted In Making The Invitation As Attractive As Possible.

He Really Wanted Those Invited To Come.

The King In This Parable Had Long Ago Sent Out His Invitations.

MANY DID NOT RESPOND TO THE INVITATION OF THE KING !!

He Was Furious And He Sent Out His Armies To Destroy Them.

The King Rightfully Brought Judgment Upon The Offenders.

MEANING:

ALL THINGS ARE READY IS THE MESSAGE OF THE GOSPEL.

YOU DON’T COME TO GOD’S FEAST AND PREPARE YOUR OWN MEAL.

HE HAS MADE IT READY FOR YOU; YOU COME TO RECEIVE.

The Reaction Of Those Invited Made No Sense,

The Reaction Of Many To The Gospel IS LIKE THIS.

THIS WAS A PROPHECY OF WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO JERUSALEM, THE CITY WHOSE RELIGIOUS LEADERS SO STRONGLY REJECTED JESUS AND HIS GOSPEL.

3. (8-10) THE THIRD INVITATION.

The King Was Determined That He MANY AT THE BANQUET.

SO AN INVITATION WAS GIVEN TO ALL WHO WOULD HEAR.

This Is A Parable About Grace.

Those Who Were Invited And Who Came

Were Utterly Undeserving Of The Invitation

4. (11-14) THE MAN WITHOUT A WEDDING GARMENT.

When The King Came To See The Guests:

The King Carefully Examined His Guests.

Who Wore The Garments Offered To Those Attending A Wedding Feast.

A Man There Who Did Not Have On A Wedding Garment:

The Man Without A Robe Was Conspicuous By His Difference.

Why Did They Not Come To The Wedding Party?

Because They Refused The Invitation.

Because They Were Called, But Not Chosen.

NOTE:

THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS ARE THE CONDEMNED GUESTS.

What Is The Meaning Of The Parable Of The Wedding Feast?

God Sent His Son Into The World And The Very People Who Should Have Celebrated His Coming Rejected Him, Bringing Judgment Upon Themselves.

As A Result, The Kingdom Of Heaven Was Opened Up To Anyone Who Will Set Aside His Own Righteousness And By Faith Accept The Righteousness God Provides In Christ.

Those Who Ignore The Gift Of Salvation And Cling Instead To Their Own

GOOD WORKS Will Spend Eternity In Hell.

The Self-Righteous Pharisees Who Heard This Parable Did Not Miss Jesus’ Point.
