Luke 24: 44-49.
Studying the Doctrine Of Holy Spirit:
THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT | GOD HIMSELF: JOHN 14:
THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: GOD WITH US: ACTS 2:
Peter's Sermon At Pentacost: PREACHED WITH POWER AND 3000 ADDED TO THE CHURCH
THE PURPOSE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: ROMANS 8: 1-13:
Deliverance Through The Spirit:
Our Spiritual Life Began At Salvation:
We Were Given A New Nature
The Sin Nature Was Defeated.
We Will Experience A Progressive Victory Of It.
Walking After The Spirit:
WE DISCOVER THAT A CHRISTIAN LIVES
BY A HIGHER LAW THAN THE MOSAIC LAW,
AND THAT IS “THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS”. (ROM. 8:2).
The HOLY SPIRIT:
GIVES THE CHRISTIAN THE POWER TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE,
ENABLES US TO KEEP THE SPIRITUAL REQUIREMENTS OF GOD’S LAW.
A Person Who Walks According To The Spirit
Is One Who Is Saved And Dominated By The Spirit.
The Main Thrust Of A Christian:
Is Towards Christ.
Is Towards The Things Of The Spirit.
For Those Who Are According To The Flesh
Set Their Minds On The Things Of The Flesh.
The Unsaved Person Is Dominated By The Sin Nature.
The Unsaved Person Walks According To The Flesh Always.
BUT THE MIND SET ON THE SPIRIT IS LIFE AND PEACE.
LIFE AND PEACE BELONG TO GOD’S CHILDREN ALONE.
THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: SANCTIFICATION: Galatians 5: 13-26:
The Holy Spirit Provides Us Power To Live The Fullness Of The Christian Life.
This Power Works For Two Primary Purposes:
TO SANCTIFY US FOR PROPER WORSHIP OF GOD.
TO EMPOWER US FOR THE MISSION WHICH GOD HAS GIVEN THE CHURCH.
BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:
WE CAN OVERCOME THE DESIRES OF THE FLESH,
WE CAN CONTINUALLY GROW IN MANIFESTING THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT.
THE POWER TO LOVE LIKE CHRIST: VERSES 13-15.
THE POWER TO LIVE LIKE CHRIST: VERSES 16-26.
THE HOLY SPIRIT PROMISES VICTORY OVER SIN:
THE HOLY SPIRIT PROVIDES VICTORY OVER SIN:
The Nature Of Freedom In Christ:
Christian, You Are Free.
Free From Law,
Free From The Dominion Of Sin,
Free From Good Works To Gain Approval Form God,
Free From Condemnation And Free From Eternal Judgment.
You Are Spiritually Free In Christ.
Christian Liberty Is Service Not Selfishness.
Freedom In Christ Is Fulfilling The Law Of Love.
The Entire Law Is Summed Up In A Single Command:
Love Your Neighbor As Yourself:
We Are NOT FREE FROM GOD'S LAW
BUT ARE NOW UNDER GOD IN CHRIST'S LAW !!
A NEW COMMAND I GIVE YOU: LOVE ONE ANOTHER,
AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, SO YOU MUST LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
NOW,
THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: EMPOWERMENT:
LUKE 24: 44-49:
ONE POSSIBLE OUTLINE:
NOTE: Luke Was The Author Of Two Books:
Gospel Of Luke (Tells The Story Of The Life Of Jesus).
Acts Of The Apostles (Tells The Story Of The Early Church).
There Is Some Overlap Between The Two Books.
1. JESUS COMMISSIONS HIS FOLLOWERS:
(LUKE 24:44–49).
THEN HE OPENED THEIR MINDS TO UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURES,
I AM SENDING THE PROMISE OF MY FATHER UPON YOU
BUT STAY IN THE CITY UNTIL YOU ARE CLOTHED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH.
2. JESUS TEACHES HIS FOLLOWERS:
(ACTS 1:1–5).
THE CONTEXT WHEN JESUS MAKES THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:
Jesus Began to Do And Teach Until The Day He Was Taken Up.
He Had Given Commands through The Holy Spirit To The Apostles.
Jesus Presented Himself Alive To Them After His Suffering By Many Proofs,
Appearing To Them During Forty Days And Speaking About The Kingdom Of God.
And While Staying with Them He Ordered Them Not To Depart From Jerusalem,
But To Wait For The Promise Of The Father,
He Said, You Heard From Me;
For John Baptized With Water,
But You Will Be Baptized with the Holy Spirit.
He Proved The Resurrection.
He Highlighted The Kingdom Of God.
He Commanded Them To Wait.
3. JESUS PROMISES TO EMPOWER HIS FOLLOWERS:
(ACTS 1:6–8).
YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER !!
Therefore, When They Had Come Together, They Asked Him: Lord, Are You Now Restoring The Kingdom To Israel? (V. 6).
THE REDEMPTION OF ISRAEL IS A MAJOR CONCERN OF JESUS’ DISCIPLES.
The Apostles’ Understanding Of The Kingdom Of God Was Linked With The Nation Israel.
They Believed That God Would Restore Israel To Its Earlier Position Of Power And Prestige.
They Equated That Restoration With The Kingdom Of God.
Jesus’ Promise That The Apostles Would Receive The Gift Of The Holy Spirit (v. 5) Sounded To Them Like The Beginning Of That Restoration.
Would This Be The Way The Kingdom Would Come ?
While Misguided, The Apostles’ Question Is Quite Natural.
Jesus Had Previously Told Them: It Isn’t For You To Know Times Or Seasons Which The Father Has Set Within His Own Authority.
Jesus Had Said Of The Coming Of The Kingdom, Luke 21:34-36:
So Be Careful, Or Your Hearts Will Be Loaded Down With Carousing, Drunkenness, And Cares Of This Life, And That Day Will Come On You Suddenly.
For It Will Come Like A Snare On All Those Who Dwell On The Surface Of All The Earth.
Therefore Be Watchful All The Time, Praying That You May Be Counted Worthy To Escape All These Things That Will Happen, And To Stand Before The Son Of Man.
Jesus Does Not Tell Them That Israel Will Not Be Restored.
Instead, He Tells Them That The Times And Season are God’s Business—Not Theirs.
Jesus Doesn’t Want The Apostles To Be Distracted.
They Have More Urgent Business To Take Care Of.
He Wants To Direct Their Attention From Things That They Don’t Need To Know To Things That They Do Need To Do.
Very Shortly, He Will Talk About Jesus Remaining In Heaven Until The Times Of Restoration Of All Things, Which God Spoke Long Ago By The Mouth Of His Holy Prophets (3:21).
But You Will Receive Power (Dynamite) When The Holy Spirit Has Come Upon You (V. 8a).
The Apostles Had Asked About The Restoration Of Israel’s Political Power (v. 6).
Jesus Tells Them That They Will Receive A Different Kind Of Power—God’s Power—Conveyed To Them By The Agency Of The Holy Spirit—God’s Spirit At Work In The World And In Their Lives.
It Was This Same Holy Spirit That Jesus Received At His Baptism (Luke 3:21-22)—And It Was This Same Holy Spirit That Empowered His Earthly Ministry.
Now This Holy Spirit Will Empower His Apostles At Pentecost (and Billions Of Believers After Pentecost) To Accomplish What Jesus Wants Them To Do—To Bear Witness To Him (v. 8b).
You Will Be Witnesses (Greek: Martures: Martyr) (v. 8b).
In His Sermon On The Day Of Pentecost, Peter Will Make The Point That All Of The Apostles Are Witnesses To Jesus’ Resurrection (2:32).
The Uttermost Parts Of The Earth:
• Jerusalem, Of Course, Is The Holy City—The Home Of The Temple—The Center Of Jewish Religious Life.
• Judea Is The Territory Or Region In Which Jerusalem Is Located.
• Samaria Is The Territory Just To The North Of Judea.
Hearing That They Will Be Witnesses To Samaria Would Be A Surprise. The People Of Judea And Galilee Consider Themselves To Be The People Of God, But They Regard The Samaritans As Apostates.
While Many Jewish People Are Living In Dispersion In Various Nations, The Jewish People Think Of Other Nations And The Gentiles Who Inhabit Those Nations As A Lower Form Of Life.
They Know That God Has Chosen Israel To Be His People, But They Tend To Forget That God Has Also Made Provision For Gentiles. In The Covenant That He Established With Abram, God Promised, “I Will Bless Those Who Bless You, And I Will Curse Him Who Curses You.
All Of The Families Of The Earth will Be Blessed In You” (Genesis 12:3).
So The Apostles Will Start Where They Are (Jerusalem)
And Will Gradually Spread The Gospel In Wider And Wider Circles Until The Whole World Is Encompassed.
That Is An Excellent Model For The Church To Follow Today.
Power From The Holy Spirit:
The Modern Church's Greatest Need!
Acts 1:8 The Last Known Words Of Jesus During His Earthly Ministry.
Shouldn’t His Last Command Be Our First Concern?
Our Teacher, The Spirit, In Some Very Real Way Interacts With Us, Illuminating The Inspired Word And Leading Us Into All Truth, Even As Jesus Promised.
THE PROMISE OF THE FATHER WAS:
THE PERSON OF THE SPIRIT, ( came to indwell believers ),
THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, ( came to give power to live in Christ )
THE PLAN OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ( to all the world ).
WHAT DID JESUS MEAN BY GREATER WORKS ?
The Greater Works To Which Jesus Referred Were Not Greater In Power Than Those He Performed, But Greater In Extent.
The Disciples Would Perform Miraculous Works Like Jesus.
Physical Miracles Were Not Primarily What Jesus Had In Mind,
* Jesus Performed More Miracles Than Disciples.
His miracles were many in each day for 3 years.
* The Lord Spoke Of His Followers Performing Greater Works,
Referring To The Extent Of The Spiritual Miracle Of Salvation.
* Jesus Never Preached Outside Of Palestine,
Yet His Followers Would Spread The Gospel Worldwide.
* Jesus Had Only A Limited Outreach To Gentiles.
The Disciples Would Reach The Gentile World With The Gospel.
The Number Of Believers In Christ Would Also Grow Far Beyond The Hundreds That Were Numbered During His Lifetime.
* The Power To Perform Those Greater Works Would Only Be Available Because Jesus Was Going To The Father.
It Was Only Then That He Would Send The Holy Spirit To Indwell Believers And Empower Them For Ministry.
