VERSES 1-10.

2. THE SOLDIERS REPORT.

VERSES 11-15.

3. THE GREAT COMMISSION.

VERSES 16-20.

KEY TAKEAWAY:

THE RESURRECTION POWER BROUGHT JESUS BACK TO LIFE.

THE RESURRECTION POWER SENDS US OUT ON MISSION.

MATTHEW 27: THE DARKNESS AND AGONY.

MATTHEW 28: FILLED WITH LIFE AND WORSHIP AND DISMAY.

1. THE GLORIOUS RESURRECTION.

THE GREAT DISCOVERY.

1 THRU 10.

THE STAGE IS SET:

The Birth Of The Church.

The Mission To Follow.

Jesus Had Died On The Cross.

Jesus Was Buried Before Sundown.

Buried In The Borrowed Tomb Of Joseph Of Arimathea.

The Roman Soldiers Stand Guard At The Tomb.

THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND PILATE DID NOT WANT THE BODY STOLEN.

(MATTHEW 27:57–66).

THEY DID NOT WANT

FOLLOWERS OF JESUS

TO BE ABLE TO CLAIM

HE HAD BEEN RESURRECTED.

Before Dawn On Sunday, An Amazing Scene Unfolds At The Tomb.

A Mighty Earthquake Occurs At The Tomb.

A Mighty Angel Of The Lord Descends.

A RISEN LORD:

THE GUARDS WERE EYE WITNESSES TO THIS EVENT.

The Seal Is Broken, Stone Is Rolled Back, An Angel Is Present.

The Guards Shake In Fear And Then Faint.

(Matthew 28:1–4).

Two Women Named Mary Arrive On The Scene Around Sunrise.

They Find The Angel Present And The Guards Asleep On The Ground.

The Angel Shows Them The Empty Tomb Of JESUS.

THE ANGEL TELLS THEM JESUS, THE ONE WHO WAS CRUCIFIED, IS RISEN.

AN ANGEL'S MESSAGE:

THE ANGEL GAVE A SPECIFIC MESSAGE TO TAKE BACK TO THE DISCIPLES:

TELL THEM JESUS IS RAISED FROM THE DEAD.

TELL THEM JESUS IS GOING BEFORE THEM TO GALILEE.

TELL THEM THEY WILL SEE JESUS THERE.

(Matthew 28:1, 5–8).

The Women Quickly Leave To Do As The Angel Has Said.

But They Are Stopped Along The Way By Jesus Himself.

They Fall On The Ground And Take Hold Of His Feet.

THEY RECOGNIZE THAT HE IS THE SON OF GOD.

RISEN FROM THE DEAD.

THEY WORSHIP HIM.

Like The Angel Did, Jesus Tells Them Not To Be Afraid.

Go And Tell His Disciples To Go To Galilee Where They Will See Him.

(Matthew 28:9–10).

THE TWO WOMEN SHOULD BE THE FIRST TO RECEIVE THE NEWS.

MARY OF MAGDALA AND MARY OF BETHANY.

THEY WERE THERE AT THE CROSS.

THEY WERE THERE WHEN THEY LAID IN THE TOMB.

THEY WERE THE FIRST TO KNOW THE JOY OF THE RESURRECTION.

AN ANGEL'S INSTRUCTION:

(I) THEY ARE URGED TO BELIEVE.

So Staggering That It Might Seem Beyond Belief.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

The Angel Reminds Them Of The Promise Of Jesus.

The Angel Confronts Them With The Empty Tomb.

Every Word Is A Summons To Believe.

Many Who Feel That The Promises Of Christ Are Too Good To Be True.

That Hesitation Can Be Dispelled Only By Taking Him At His Word.

(II) THEY ARE URGED TO SHARE.

They Have Discovered The Fact Of The Risen Christ.

Their First Duty Is To Proclaim It To And To Share It With Others.

"Go, Tell!" Is The First Command Which Comes To All Who Believe.

(III) THEY ARE URGED TO REJOICE.

The Word With Which The Risen Christ Meets Them Is REJOICE.

JESUS WOULD MEET OTHERS AND SAY REJOICE !!!

EVIDENCE OF RESURRECTION TO THE DISCIPLES:

THE FACTS:

THE TOMB WAS FOUND EMPTY.

THE ANGEL'S EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY FROM THE TOMB.

THE LORD'S LITERAL, PHYSICAL, BODILY APPEARANCE.

2. THE SOLDIERS REPORT.

THEIR LAST RESORT.

11 THRU 15.

MEANWHILE, THE GUARDS AWAKE.

Some Guards Immediately Go And Report To The Chief Priests.

THE ATTEMPTED COVERUP:

THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND ELDERS:

Meet And Decide To Bribe The Guards.

Bride Them To Tell A Different Story.

To Say That They Fell Asleep On Duty.

To Say That Followers Of Jesus Came And Took His Body Away.

The Truth Of Jesus' Resurrection Began To Spread.

The Lie That He Remains Dead Is Being Distributed.

Both Stories Continue To Be Told And Believed Today.

(Matthew 28:11–15).

EVEN TODAY THE STORY HAS TWO VERSIONS:

His Body Was Stolen From The Tomb And He Did Not Rise From Dead.

HE DID RISE FROM THE DEAD.

Note:

The Jewish Authorities Used:

They Used Treachery To Lay Hold On Him.

They Used Unlawfulness To Try Him.

They Used Slander To Charge Him To Pilate.

They Used Bribery To Silence The Truth About Him.

3. THE GREAT COMMISSION.

THE GLORY OF THE FINAL PROMISE.

16 THRU 20.

JESUS MEETS THE ELEVEN REMAINING DISCIPLES IN GALILEE.

JESUS TELLS THEM THAT HE HAS BEEN GIVEN AUTHORITY:

AUTHORITY GIVEN TO HIM BY GOD THE FATHER.

AUTHORITY TO SEND THEM OUT ON THEIR LIFELONG MISSION.

THE GREAT COMMISSION:

JESUS COMMANDS HIS DISCIPLES TO MAKE MORE DISCIPLES.

PRIMARY MISSION:

THROUGH COOPERATING AND MENTORING:

Personal Expansion Of His Kingdom.

    Baptize These New Followers.

Teach Them To Obey Everything He Has Told Them To Do.

THIS GREAT COMMISSION IS:

MORE:

THAN OUR JUSTIFICATION TO URGE MISSIONARY WORK.

THAN OUR ENCOURAGEMENT TO CONTINUE MISSIONARY WORK.

IT IS OUR DUTY TO EVANGELIZE THE WORLD.

A. WHAT IS ITS SOURCE OF THIS COMMISSION ?

THE SOURCE IS THE AUTHORITY AND COMMANDMENT OF CHRIST.

1. THE AUTHORITY OF CHRIST.

Jesus Speaks These Words After His Resurrection.

HE IS NOW TO BE EXALTED TO THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD.

TO A THRONE OF POWER AND AUTHORITY.

The Authority Given After His Triumph Over Sin And Death.

The Authority He Will Now Use In Conquering The World.

THIS IS AUTHORITY IN HEAVEN.

Therefore It Will Involve Heavenly Blessings:

That Will Pardon, Regenerate, Grant Eternal Life.

THIS IS AUTHORITY ALSO ON EARTH.

Therefore It Will Bring Never Ending Blessings:

That Will Help Mankind Here And Now.

2. THE COMMAND OF CHRIST.

By His Authority He Commissions His Disciples To Preach The Gospel.

THE FIRST CLAIM IS TO PREACH THE GOSPEL.

THE SIMPLE, TRUE, FULL, GOOD NEWS OF THE GOSPEL.

What Is The Motive To Obey The Great Commission ?

It Is A Direct Command From Jesus To His Disciples Both Then And Now.

WHAT THE FIRST CLAIM OF MISSIONARY WORK IS NOT !!

NOT A SOCIAL GOSPEL | NOT A SOCIAL INJUSTICE GOSPEL.

Back In The 1960s :

Liberation Theology Arrived In The Roman Catholic Church.

It Began In Latin America And By 1971 At A Bishop's Conference:

This Liberation Theology Was Made A Doctrine In The Roman Church.

Liberation Theology Basically Said:

Jesus Came To Deliver The Oppressed From The Oppressors.

It Combines Political Philosophy, Usually Of A Marxist Orientation,

With A Theology Of Salvation As Liberation From Injustice.

LIBERATION THEOLOGY CLAIMS:

THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH THEN IS TO FIGHT SOCIAL INJUSTICE.

REDISTRIBUTE THE WEALTH, POWER, OPPORTUNITY, PRIVILEGE TO THE OPPRESSED.

They Go So Far As To Say It's A Gospel Issue.

They Are Defending The Introduction Of A Social Message.

AN ALLIANCE WITH THE WORLD.

EVANGELICALS REJECTED LIBERATION THEOLOGY.

REJECTED IT: IT WAS JUST ANOTHER ENTRY OF THE SOCIAL GOSPEL.

It Had Completely Obliterated The Denominations Back In The 1920s.

AS PART OF THE GOSPEL WELL WE ALL SEE ITS EFFECT:

Brought Down Christian Organizations.

Brought Down Christian Conferences.

Torn Up Protestant Denominations.

Ripped Up Churches And Emptied Churches.

Created Chaos In Seminaries And Christian Universities.

Put Former Friends In The Category Of Enemies.

THIS IS NOT THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKING THIS DESTRUCTION !!

NOTE:

The Father Of Social Justice Was Pragmatism.

Addressing Problems Logically And Practically Not Spiritually.

Pragmatism Is A Movement That Came After Post Modern Christianity.

Of Course Post Modern Christianity Was The Movement Of Relative Truth.

So, Pragmatism Has A Strategy To Make Alliance With The World System.

Alliance Of Children Of God With Children Of Satan.

JESUS SAID: JOHN 18: HIS KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD.

B. WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS COMMISSION ?

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO GO, PREACH, BAPTIZE, INSTRUCT.

TO GO AND PREACH THE GOSPEL.

Christians Are To Be Missionaries.

When It Is Possible, The Church Is To Spread Abroad.

We Are Not To Wait For The World To Come To Christ.

We Are To Go Out Into The World To Preach Christ.

Christianity Must Be Aggressive.

Christians Must Be Active In Carrying The Gospel Message To Everyone.

TO BAPTIZE.

Jesus Requires A CONFESSION OF DISCIPLESHIP.

Jesus Expects His Family To Be Bound Together In Church Fellowship.

BAPTIZE IN THE THREEFOLD NAME:

The Apostles Were To Go Forth And Disciple All Nations.

By Baptizing Them In:

The Name Of The Father.

The Name Of The Son.

The Name Of The Holy Spirit.

BRINGING THEM INTO THE FULL JOY OF SON-SHIP WITH GOD.

WHAT IS THE SON-SHIP ?

SON-SHIP THEOLOGY:

EMPHASIZES THE CHRISTIAN'S ADOPTION AS A CHILD OF GOD.

IT IS THE RELATIONSHIP A CHILD WOULD HAVE WITH A FATHER.

I. THE NAME OF THE FATHER, WHO AFFIRMS THIS RELATIONSHIP.

LEGALLY ACKNOWLEDGING THIS RELATIONSHIP.

II. THE NAME OF THE SON, WHO SHOWS THIS RELATIONSHIP.

VISIBLY DEMONSTRATING THROUGH OBEDIENCE AND TRUST.

III. THE NAME OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHO WORKS THIS RELATIONSHIP.

TRANSFORMING OUR THOUGHTS, MOTIVES, FEELINGS.

Galatians 4:6-7 Teaches Us That When We Believe The Gospel, We Not Only Become God's Children Legally, But We Receive The Spirit In Order To Experience Our Sonship.

TO MAKE DISCIPLES.

It Is Not Enough Just To Live Among The Lost.

THE GOSPEL IS SPREAD BY TEACHING.

The Gospel Is Taught Through Instruction Found In God's Word.

The Gospel Will Have Its Appeal Through Sober Sound Instruction.

The Gospel Will Lose Its Appeal IF IT IS JUST EMOTION.

C. WHAT IS THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF THIS COMMISSION ?

THE ENCOURAGEMENT IS THE LIVING ABIDING PRESENCE OF CHRIST.

A. THE LIVING PRESENCE OF CHRIST.

We Do Not Preach A Dead Or An Absent Christ.

We Have Not Only To Do With The Jesus Of Ancient History.

The Living Christ Is With Us.

Christ Is With Us In Our Missionary Work.

B. THE ABIDING PRESENCE OF CHRIST.

He Is With His People In Their Missionary Work To The End Of The World.

Then Missionary Work Is To Be Continuous.

Then Christ Is With Us Now In This Work Even As With The Apostles.

WE CANNOT FAIL WITH SUCH A PRESENCE.

We Are To Preach To All Nations.

In The End All Nations Will Be Won.

In The End The Earth Shall Be Full Of The Knowledge Of The Lord.

4. WHAT IS THE PRACTICAL OBSERVATION OF THIS COMMISSION ?

Jesus Spoke To Very Ordinary People Who Knew Him Personally.

Jesus Presented A Plan That Was Brief, Simple, Clear.

Jesus Was Intense About The Message.

Jesus Was Relaxed About The Method.

Jesus Expected Action From His Followers.

JESUS' PROMISES:

HE WILL BE WITH THEM ALWAYS EVEN THROUGH ETERNITY.

(Matthew 28:16–20).

HERE WE COME TO THE END OF THE GOSPEL STORY;

HERE WE LISTEN TO THE LAST WORDS OF JESUS TO HIS MEN.

HERE AND IN THIS LAST MEETING JESUS DID THREE THINGS.

HE GAVE THEM:

(I) HIS POWER.

Nothing Was Beyond The Power Of Him Who Died And Conquered Death.

THIS POWER WAS THE ABILITY TO DO GOD'S WILL.

(II) A PURPOSE.

THIS PURPOSE WAS TO SWEEP IN HIS CHOSEN ONES.

(III) A PROMISE.

THE PROMISE OF SUCCESS FROM GOD'S VIEWPOINT !!
