1. THE INSTRUCTIONS (19:28-34).

JESUS INSTRUCTS HIS DISCIPLES.

PREPARATION FOR HIS TRIUMPHAL ENTRY.



Jesus Sent Two Disciples And You Will Find A Donkey And A Colt.

Loose Them And Bring Them To Me.

And If Anyone Says Anything To You

You Shall Say: The Lord Has Need Of Them.

And Immediately He Will Send Them.



ALTHIS WAS DONE THAT IT MIGHT BE FULFILLED.

IT WAS SPOKEN BY THE PROPHET SAYING:

BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, LOWLY.

AND SITTING ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A DONKEY.



Jesus Knew The Religious Leaders In Jerusalem Were Going To:

ARREST HIM

CONDEMN HIM

MOCK HIM

SCOURGE HIM

DELIVER HIM FOR CRUCIFIXION



YET :

HE HAD THE COURAGE TO ENTER JERUSALEM.

HE HAD THE COURAGE TO ENTER PUBLICALLY.



THE PLANNED RIDE ON A COLT WAS A PARABLE ILLUSTRATED.

A DELIBERATE ACT OF SELF-DISCLOSURE.

THE SECRECY WAS NOW BEING LIFTED.


TWO PROPHECIES:

WHO: THE PROPHECY OF THE COMING KING OF ZION:

ZECHARIAH 9:9:

REJOICE GREATLY, O DAUGHTER OF ZION.

SHOUT ALOUD, O DAUGHTER OF JERUSALEM.

BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU.

RIGHTEOUS AND HAVING SALVATION IS HE.

HUMBLE AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY,

ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A DONKEY.



WHEN: THE PROPHECY OF DANIEL’S SEVENTY WEEKS:

FULFILLED TO THE EXACT DAY ON HIS TRIUMPHAL ENTRY.

DANIEL 9:24–25

SEVENTY WEEKS ARE DECREED:

ABOUT YOUR PEOPLE AND YOUR HOLY CITY,

TO FINISH THE TRANSGRESSION,

TO PUT AN END TO SIN, LAND TO ATONE FOR INIQUITY,

TO BRING IN EVERLASTING RIGHTEOUSNESS,

TO SEAL BOTH VISION AND PROPHET,

AND TO ANOINT A MOST HOLY PLACE.

KNOW THEREFORE AND UNDERSTAND

THAT FROM THE GOING OUT OF THE WORD

TO RESTORE AND BUILD JERUSALEM

TO THE COMING OF AN ANOINTED ONE,

A PRINCE, THERE SHALL BE SEVEN WEEKS.


2. THE ENTRY (19:35–38).

JESUS RECEIVES ADORATION AS THE MESSIAH.

JESUS ENCOURAGES ADORATION AS THE MESSIAH.



Hosanna To The Son Of David.

Blessed Is He Who Comes In The Name Of The Lord.

Hosanna In The Highest.



LAID THEIR CLOTHES ON THE ROAD.

The Act Of Spreading Out The Garment:

Recognition, Loyalty And Promise Of Support.



LAID PALM BRANCHES ON THE ROAD.

The Act Of Spreading Out Palm Tree Branches:

Symbolic Of Victory And Honor.



SANG AND SHOUTED SONGS OF PRAISE.

The Act Of Singing And Shouting:

OPEN MESSIANIC ADORATION OF JESUS.



THEY LOOK TO JESUS FOR SALVATION.

HOSANNA MEANS SAVE NOW !!

THESE ARE TITLES APPROPRIATE FOR THE MESSIAH.

SON OF DAVID: WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD.



JESUS RECEIVED AND ENCOURAGED THIS WORSHIP.



WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY.



THE FULFILLMENT OF PHOPHECY IS SIGNIFICANT.

Matthew Says That The King Coming On The Foal Of A Donkey

AN EXACT FULFILLMENT OF SCRIPTURE.

Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter Of Zion! Shout,

Daughter Of Jerusalem! See, Your King Comes To You,

Righteous And Having Salvation, Gentle And Riding On A

Donkey, On A Colt, The Foal Of A Donkey.



THE PROMISE OF HIS ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM IS SIGNIFICANT.

TO MAKE PUBLIC HIS CLAIM AS THEIR MESSIAH AND KING.

RIDES IN THE CAPITAL CITY.

RIDES IN AS A CONQUERING KING.

RIDES IN AS FOR A ROYAL ENTRY.

RIDES IN AS A KING ASCENDING TO HIS THRONE.

RIDES IN AS A KING TO RULE OVER HIS KINGDOM.

SYMBOLICALLY: AS KING OF HIS SPIRITUAL KINGDOM.



SHOUT PRAISES AND WORSHIP HIM OPENLY IS SIGNIFICANT.

NO LONGER DOES HE TELL HIS DISCIPLES TO BE QUIET ABOUT HIM.

(Matthew 12:16, 16:20).


THE ENTRY OF THE KING IS SIGNIFICANT.

(i) It Was Carefully Planned. Not A Sudden Impulsive Action.

(ii) It Was An Act Of Defiance And Of Courage.

(iii) It Was A Deliberate Claim To Be King.

(iv) It Was One Last Appeal.



A DEMONSTRATION OF HIS ROYALTY IS SIGNIFICANT.

I. A Valuable Reminder Of His Power Of Self-Restraint.

Ii. A Dramatic Indication Of His Acceptance With The People.

Iii. A Hint Of Christ's True Royalty.

Iv. A Prophecy Of His Future Glory.



THE ADVENT OF THE HUMBLE KING IS SIGNIFICANT.

THE HUMBLE CHARACTER OF THE PROCESSION.

1. It Was On A Donkey Not On A Royal Stallion.

2. The Manner Of The Procession Was Humiliating.

A Great King Gets A Formal Parade.

A Great King Gets Elegance, Glamour, Status.

3.The Demeaning Interruptions Of The Pharisees.

MEEK AND LOWLY IN HEART !!


UNFORTUNATELY:

THE PRAISE THE PEOPLE LAVISHED ON JESUS.

NOT BECAUSE THEY RECOGNIZED HIM AS SAVIOR FROM SIN.

THEY WELCOMED HIM AS THEIR A MESSIANIC DELIVERER.

SOMEONE WHO WOULD LEAD THEM IN A REVOLT.

THESE ARE THE ONES WHO HAILED HIM AS KING.

Recognizing Him As The Son Of David.

Who Came In The Name Of The Lord.


BUT HE DID NOT MEET THEIR EXPECTATIONS IS SIGNIFICANT.

HE REFUSED TO LEAD THEM IN A REVOLT AGAINST ROME.

His Manner Of Coming Was Not As Expected.

His Manner Of Coming Did Not Match Their Belief.

WITHIN DAYS THE CROWDS QUICKLY TURNED ON HIM.

Their Hosannas Would Change To Cries Of “Crucify Him!”

Those Who Hailed Him As A Hero Would Soon Reject Him.



The Story Of The Triumphal Entry Is One Of Contrasts.

Those Contrasts Contain Applications To Believers.

It Is The Story Of The King Who Came As A Lowly Servant.

Jesus Was Not Deceived By This Enthusiastic Welcome.

He Knew Rejection By The Crowds.


THE NATION AS A WHOLE WOULD REJECT HIM IS SIGNIFICANT.

WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME OF REJECTION OF KING JESUS ?

The Nation Would Be Destroyed And Scattered.

The Temple Would Be Burned To The Ground.

Temple Stones Would Be Displaced To Seize The Melted Gold.

HE WENT TO THE TEMPLE NOT THE PALACE IS SIGNIFICANT.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JESUS’ ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM:

IT WAS NOT POLITICAL BUT SPIRITUAL.


He Took Note Of What Was Happening In The City.

Then Returned With His Disciples To Bethany.

Where They Spent The Night.

YES, JESUS CHRIST DOES COME TO CONQUER:

BUT NOT BY FORCE AS EARTHLY KINGS.

BUT BY LOVE, GRACE, MERCY, SACRIFICE.


BUT NOT A KINGDOM OF ARMIES AND SPLENDOR.

BUT OF LOWLINESS AND SERVANT-HOOD.


HE CONQUERS NOT NATIONS BUT HEARTS AND MINDS.

HE TRIUMPS IN OUR HEART AND MIND.

HE RULES IN PEACE AND JOY.


3. THE REBUKE (19:39–40).

JESUS COMMENTS TO THE JEWISH LEADERS.

THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS IS CHALLENGED.


TEACHER, REBUKE YOUR DISCIPLES:

The Crowd’s Praise Made Enemies Of Jesus Uncomfortable.

It Made Them Object To The Praise Being Offered.

It Made Them Know They Were Being Defeated.


John 12:19 Says:

That On This Day, The Pharisees Therefore Said Among

Themselves, You See That You Are Accomplishing Nothing.

Look, The World Has Gone After Him!”


HOW DOES THE ENEMY KNOW HE IS LOSING A BATTLE ?

When The Victim Is PRAISING GOD DURING THE BATTLE !!


I TELL YOU THAT IF THESE SHOULD KEEP SILENT,

THE STONES WOULD IMMEDIATELY CRY OUT:


ON THIS DAY, JESUS WAS GOING TO BE PRAISED.

For Most Of His Ministry, Jesus Discourage People From Publicly Celebrating Him As Messiah.


HERE JESUS INVITED PUBLIC PRAISE AND ADORATION AS MESSIAH.


THE STONES WOULD IMMEDIATELY CRY OUT:

The Idea Of Creation Itself Praising God May Seem Strange.


BUT THE BIBLE SPEAKS ABOUT IT IN A FEW PLACES:

Trees, Hills, Oceans, Rivers, Mountains, Valleys, Cattle And

Creeping Things, Birds And Fields All Give Praise To God.

(Psalm 148:7-13, Psalm 96:11-12).


YET THE STONES STAYED SILENT ON THAT DAY.

WHY ?? BECAUSE ALL THE MULTITUDE PRAISED JESUS:


The Whole Multitude Of The Disciples Began To Rejoice !!


A LOUD VOICE FOR ALL THE MIGHTY WORKS:

They Praise Him: Filled With Remembrance.

They Remembered Him: All The Mighty Works.

They Saw Him: Raise Lazarus From The Dead.

They Told Others: The Great Things God Had Done.


A GREAT INDICTMENT:

MUCH OF OUR PRAISE IS MINDLESS.

FOR WHAT EXACTLY DO WE PRAISE HIM ?
