Romans 5:1-11:

TODAY:
Romans 6:1-14
Living In Freedom | Choose To Present Yourself To God
REMINDER: Written To Believers Not To Unbelievers
This Portion Of Romans Looks At Sanctification

Deals With The Progression Of Sanctification
It Shows Us How To Live Unto The Righteousness Of God In Our Experience
It Shows Us God's Power For Victorious Living Over Our Present Sins
It Shows Us How We Can Keep From Sinning Habitually In Life
It Shows Us That The Power Comes Through Union With Christ
It Shows Us That Jesus Appropriates His Power Through Faith
It Shows Us To No Longer Obey Sin As When Unsaved
It Shows Us God Breaks The Power Of Sin For Those Who Are In Christ

QUESTION: HOW TO LIVE IN TRUE SPIRITUAL FREEDOM

1. UNDERSTAND DEAD TO SIN AND NOW LIFE IN CHRIST
2. PRESENT YOURSELF TO GOD
1. UNDERSTAND DEAD TO SIN AND NOW LIFE IN CHRIST

A. THE QUESTION: DO WE KEEP ON SINNING? ABSOLUTELY NOT

We Have Been Delivered From The Penalty Of Sin

Also We Must Be Delivered From The Power Of Sin

Justification Declares The Sinner Righteous
Sanctification Makes The Sinner Righteous

Justification Is A Once-And-For-All Act
Sanctification Is A Continuous Work

Justification Causes Salvation
Sanctification Is The Result Of Salvation

Justification Deals With Our Standing Before God
Sanctification Deals With Our Experience In Life

Justification Removes The Guilt And Penalty Of Sin
Sanctification Removes The Growth And Power Of Sin

Justification Changes A Person's Position Before God
Sanctification Changes A Person's Character

Justification Is Righteousness Imputed
Sanctification Is Righteousness Imparted

Justification Is For The Sinner
Sanctification Is In The Saint
Justification And Sanctification Are Not The Same
But They Cannot Be Separated
Sanctification Is A Necessary Step That Proceeds From Union With Christ
Every Person Who Is Justified Must Experience Some Sanctification

B. OUR BAPTISM WITH CHRIST AND UNION WITH CHRIST
A Justified Believer
A Personal Union With Jesus Christ
Baptized Into Jesus | Baptized Into His Death
Paul Wants To Show That A Christian Has Actually Died To Sin
Paul Wants To Show It Is A Spiritual Baptism

Symbolic Image Of Going Down Into A Watery Grave
Symbolic Image Of Rising Up Into A Newness Of Life In Christ
Outward Symbolic Image | Inward Death and New Birth

Meaning Of Baptism: Could Mean DIP or Could Mean IDENTIFY

Romans 6 Baptism Refers To Spirit Baptism When A Person Is Identified With Christ Or Put Into Union With Him Sharing In His Death

The Fact Of Spirit Baptism: The Christian Shares The Death Of Christ To Sin Through Union With Him And This Comes About By The Baptizing Work Of The Spirit:
"For As Many Of You As Have Been Baptized Into Christ Have Put On Christ" (Gal. 3:27)
C. OUR OLD MAN CRUCIFIED AS CHRIST WAS CRUCIFIED
Every Christian Is A Dead Person When It Comes To Sin
Every Christian Dies Positionally At The Cross
Every Christian Dies Actually At Conversion
Every Christian Is To Live Believing They Are Dead Men!

SAVED TO SERVE SIN NO MORE — Romans 6:6-7

SAVED TO LIVE UNTO GOD — Romans 6:8-10

Jesus Christ Can Forgive You For Sins
Jesus Christ Can Put To Death Your Sinful Life
He Requires That You Come To Him On His Terms
He Requires That You Acknowledge You Are Sinful Before God
He Requires That You Acknowledge You Are Guilty From You Sin
He Requires That You Acknowledge You Can Not Help Yourself
He Requires That You Acknowledge Him As Your Lord And Savior
He Will Give You Forgiveness Of Sins And Give Eternal Life With Him
He Will Give You The Power To Serve Sin No Longer
He Will Give You The Power To Live A Life Unto Him

SO, CONSIDER YOURSELF DEAD TO SIN / ALIVE TO GOD

2. NOW PRESENT YOURSELF TO GOD
  • Offer Yourself To God And Not To Sin
  • Sin Will Not Have Control Over You
Paul's Argument:
The Christian Is Both Dead In Christ And Alive In Christ
The Christian Through Union With Christ Shares In His Death And Life

The Christian Shares Christ's Death:

The Sin Nature Has Been Judged
Its Power And Authority Broken
The Believer No Longer Has To Obey The Sin Nature

The Christian Shares Christ's Life:

Alive Unto God
Alive For God

How can I make it work in my everyday life?

How can I experience victory over sin and Christ's resurrected life?"

A. BY PLACING FAITH IN CHRIST'S WORK

Likewise Reckon Ye Also Yourselves To Be Dead Unto Sin
But Alive Unto God In Jesus Christ Our Lord

The Christian Is Told To RECKON Self Dead To Sin
The Christian Is Told To RECKON Self Alive To God
The Word "reckon" Is Another Word For Faith
It Means Consider, Count Or To Take Into Account
  • It Is A Term Used In Bookkeeping
  • It Is A Term Used To Consider Seriously The Facts
To Realize The Reality Of This Union With Christ By Faith
To Believe This Reality To Be True
To Continue This Attitude Of Faith
To Know This Scripture To Be True

Why Might We Fail To Experience Progressive Victory Over Sin?
Because We Fail To Believe What God Has Said About It

The Christian Is To Reckon That One Is Dead To Sin
That The Power Of The Sin Nature Has Been Broken
That One No Longer Has To Obey It

RECKON NOT YOUR SIN DEAD
TO SELF
SIN DID NOT DIE
BUT
RECKON YOUR SELF DEAD
TO SIN

One Cannot Make Self Dead To Sin By Struggling Or Praying
One Is Simply To Believe That One Has Died To Sin In Christ
One Is Simply To Believe That One Should Not Live Accordingly

God Judged Our Sin Nature
God Finds No Good In Our Sin Nature
God Expects Nothing But Failure From Our Sin Nature

HOW DO WE MAKE EXCUSES FOR OUR SIN?
  • I Have A Hot Temper Because I'm Irish
  • Everyone In My Family Is A Hothead
  • I Do Not Use My Time Wisely Because I Am Lazy By Nature
  • I Have Tired Blood
  • I Am Too Tried Because My Job Is So Demanding
  • I Am Lacking In Love But It Is My Circumstances
  • I Am Stubborn Because I Am A Dane
  • I Am Greedy Because I Am Scottish
  • I Can Not Help Myself, You Know, I Am Under Psychiatric Care
B. BY PUTTING DOWN SIN THROUGH OBEDIENCE

Do Not Let Sin Reign In Your Mortal Body
Do Not Obey The Lusts Of Sin
Do Not Let Sin Rise Up In You

Reckon (Conclude) That The Power Of Sin Has Been Broken In You
Believe That Your Union With Christ Produces Action
Believe That Your Union With Christ Results In Obedience
Believe That Your Sin Nature Was Judged
Believe That Your Sin Nature Was Dethroned

Understand That This Action Is An Act Of Your Will
Understand That This Action Is An Act Of Obedience To Christ
Understand That This Action Is An Act Of Controlling Your Body

C. BY PRESENTING YOUR LIFE TO GOD THROUGH OBEDIENCE

YES, Let God Reign In You
YES, Let Our Body Be An Instrument Of Righteousness Unto God
YES, Present Your Life To God And He Will Give You Freedom

PROMISE OF GOD
Sin Shall Not Have Dominion Over Believers
The Work Of Jesus On The Cross Judged The Believer's Sin Nature
God Broke The Power Of Sin For The Believer
THE WAY OF FAITH In Him Gives Power To Live A Life In Freedom
